Campsite is on top of a cliff and very exposed. Weather is terrible. Came back from day out and pleased to see tent still thete. Then someone came to tell me people have had to chase it across site and repeg it for me.

We are sleeping in camper van and wind is so strong the van is rocking. Tent has extra pegs in now but am worried it won't be there in morning

I have to say I don't understand camping, but why don't you go home? It sounds awful.

Why don't you take the tent down if you're not sleeping in it? Or do you lose your spot?

(I know nothing about camping.)

stripeyknickersspottysocks · 19/08/2010 18:27

Near croyde. Its to windy to take tent down, just me and dd. Plus van is small so do need it for storage. Am quite tempted to go home and in fifteen years of camping have never done so.

oh no!! how disapointing, I would also be tempted to go home but if you think you can see the night out tomorrow may be better. Is the tent damaged or not? is it worth trying to take down properly tomorrow or just throw it now? can you maybe go somewhere for tea so you are not stuck in van with your dd. how old is she?

Slubberdegullion · 19/08/2010 18:38

oh dear

When you get home can I recommend delta pegs. they don't come out.

Are you sure you can't take it down? Is there a group of families on the site that you can go and ask help from. Groups are always a bit gung ho and up for a challenge.

CerealOffender · 19/08/2010 18:40

oh dear, it will all seem better in teh morning.

Slubberdegullion · 19/08/2010 18:44

Have you got some extra pegs? You can cross peg the guys that are under the most strain.

park the van on the windward side of the tent?

Any extra guys you can tether to something immovable (like the van or a fence)?

stripeyknickersspottysocks · 19/08/2010 18:59

People have put better type pegs in, not delta. But are like a n shape hoop. They seem very sturdy. I could tie one of the guys to the van. Off to do that now, hope wind dies down soon. We,re quite cosy in van, have books and games.

Good to hear you have the van and are lovely and warm. I bet dd thinks it's all a bit of an adventure.

stripeyknickersspottysocks · 19/08/2010 19:30

Yes, wouldn't want to be in a tent. All other units are caravans or motorhomes. They have awnings but i guess they tie onto the caravans securely
. Actually there is one tent, big outwell tunnel one, looks sturdier than the quechua pop up of mine.

If you cant get delta pegs wooden pegs work well too, old fashoined I know but they swell up when wet to fill the hole and don't come out too easily, don't worry too much about your pop up flexing and bending in the wind it will just keep popping back up, my friends kept standing back up even in the back end of a hurricane last summer. Other tents collapsing all arround.
Good advice from someone to use your car as a windbreak I had to do that last week in Cornwall, it really does work. Hope the weather gets better for you, shame if you have to bail out [pardon the pun!!].

LackingInspiration · 19/08/2010 20:38

I keep hearing bad things about camping on cliff campsites! I have resolved never to do it!

Ineed2 · 19/08/2010 20:39

Can't beat the views though!!

Slubberdegullion · 20/08/2010 09:27

Are you (or should I say your tent) still with us stripey?

stripeyknickersspottysocks · 20/08/2010 10:45

Didn't sleep much last night as checking on tent frequently. Weather still awful today and forcast crap so packed up. Currently half eay up m5. Can't brlieve we went 300 miles to spend four days in torrential rain. Not been to the beach. Dd is gutted, me too.

My DH remembers as a kid of 8 his older brother (15 ish) and mother both holding onto the central pole of an old fashioned teepee style tent all night as it strained and bucked, flapped and leaned as a hurricane passed over.... their dad would drive them to the coast, help set up the tent, then head back inland to go back to work leaving the family to it for a week.

This was before the days of satellite tracking in Queensland, Australia! He remembers it as a great adventure but the rest of the family shudder....
