What size compression sack for a normal pillow?

..and what a daft-sounding Q!

We find that our 4 pillows take up way too much space in the car so this year I am going to get 4 compression sacks to de-size them a bit (they're cheap polyester pillows!).

Thing is, apart from carting a pillow into town and persuading an assistant to let me try one out, I don't know which to get, possibly on line.

the Millets options

What do you think?

what a clever idea!!
I have some old sleeping bags with their compression sacks, I could use those! - I'm off to experiment in a few minutes

Tell me what size fits pls!

Wouldn't the cost of the compression sack entirely dwarf the cost of the pillow ?

Or am I being thick here?

It does seem a good idea though - I took all the pillows last time which took up a vast amount of space in the car. This time the DC's will be managing with a nice blow up pillow each covered with a t-shirt, whilst I stash mine under their seat

or could you not simply run up a few drawstring bags which are just that little bit too small for what you are trying to cram in, thus recreating the compression sack experience?

I'm over-thinking this now, aren't I ?

ok, worked out that my stuff sack capacity is 15l. (I think!) radius was 11cm, length 40cm. It fit in one lumpy overgrown feather pillow and one reasonable polyester thingy. dd will have to snuggle up to hers.

now have one old homeless sleeping bag.

You need an old onion bag and a coat hangar for the sleeping bag! IF one follows the 'manufacturer's instructions' and don't leave sleeping bags crushed up in their sacks all year round, like we all do!

In terms of costs, yes, 4 polyester pillows cost £14, 4 compression sacs will cost me £28; however, I'd be having to hunt down a cheapy store EVERY time I went camping (central North Devon, anyone?) and be prepared to ditch the pillows in a skip before coming home to overcome the space in the car problem!

lol at waving 's 'compression sack experience'!

it's knotty problems like this which make us campers 'ard.

Enjoy the sack stuffing.

I'm still not sure we've answered your original question!

kitten helped a lot too, thanks!

I do get wound up with these things- I am also trying to reroof a gazebo which we use as a day tent but CAN I get a sail maker to reply to my enquiries??

I have 4 compression sacs of around kitten's description put by in Millets. I will deliver my verdict on Friday when I collect them!

excellent!

what on earth do I do with an onion bag???

nappyzoneloveschinesefood · 03/08/2010 19:25

we took a hard suitcase and put all our lcothesin one then put in 4 pillows and sat on it till we could close it.

nappyzoneloveschinesefood · 03/08/2010 19:26

that should have read clothes in it - we also got the ehu in it also.

notwavingjustironing · 03/08/2010 21:05

Still need onion bag and coathanger guidance please

ampere · 04/08/2010 16:04

It's not some weird ritual! Just that down/feather sleeping bags last a lot longer if you don't leave them scrunched up in their stuff sacks all year round, but you can put them loosely in an onion bag (the woven nylon string ones) then stick the loop of a coat hanger thru the top and hang the lot in the spare room wardrobe til you need to compact it into its bag to go camping with again.
