Evening all, I hope you can help. Right we have decided we are going camping for this years holiday (on Mon for a week) but my husband and I cannot decide on a site.

I am keen to go some where coastal in England mainly because the chances of better weather. We live near Edinburgh, but H doesn't want to drive more than five hours.

We have two children (5,3) and are not fussed about kids clubs or entertainment or plaparks etc.

Now my husband is reeeeallllly dragging his feet about going to England. He used to camp as a child in extremely remote, basic sites in the highlands and is convinced that the whole of England is a sprawling mass of motorways and housing estates. Can anyone point me and therefore him in the direction of picturesque rural sites not more than 5ish hours from Edinburgh.

I really don't want to have to give in and head up north for a week of howling winds and midges.

You might struggle most of the good sites are fullly booked already.

Yellowcraigs? Not been and probably too close but looks interesting location-wise - maybe would be good for future short trips!

zippy539 · 02/08/2010 20:37

Arg - hang on - looks like it's caravans only...

zippy539 · 02/08/2010 20:48

Have you checked out the Cool Camping website? There are some lovely scottish ones but I'd be tempted to give them a swerve at the height of midge season - but there might be something that's right in the north of england?

happyland · 02/08/2010 20:52

I know we have left it late! WIll check the cool camping site an yellow craigs thanks all so far

Me again - just been flicking through the Tiny Campsites book and found dalegarth (www.dalegarthguesthouseandcampsite) and Birchbank Farm (www.birchbank.co.uk) - both are really small which might appeal to your dh but in Cumbria - which wouldn't be too much of a drive.

How about North Yorkshire? Either on the coast such as Whitby or somewhere like Settle? Hawkers House (think that's what it's called) is in Robin Hood's Bay but you can't book. Knights Stainforth outside Settle is in a lovely riverside location and has fab wash facilities!!!

Lovesdogsandcats · 03/08/2010 13:51

Redbank Farm in Carnforth. Nice site, cheap and no need to book.

happyland · 03/08/2010 16:13

Will check them all out many thanks for you help

This website will help you to work out how far you can get in 5 hours' driving. Then you can look at some sites in that area.

zippy539 · 03/08/2010 19:25

chicaguapa - thanks for posting that site - it's really handy.

Mummyisamonster · 03/08/2010 20:21

I'd heartily recommend Eskdale in the lake district. Beautiful campsite and child-friendly.

Try UK Campsite for other recommended sites

fatzak · 03/08/2010 21:05

Hello Mummyisamonster - you not in Garangeoire then

We had to cancel our holiday to France this year DS1 has had a dreadful year health wise with his epilepsy, and although things are fab at the moment we couldn't risk heading over there and things going pear shape. Plus we just couldn't afford for DH to take the time off work (he's self employed) as he missed so much time when DS was in hospital. I was so looking forward to going back as we had such a great time last year.

Sorry Happyland for the hijack

happyland · 04/08/2010 19:48

No probs!

Did you get anywhere Happyland?

happyland · 05/08/2010 15:24

Yes I did thanks Zippy539, but unsurprisingly we are off to Mull again, which is admittedly beautiful but not quite what I had in mind!! H was all (through gritted teeth) I don't mind where we go etc etc, but i just know that on day 2 he would be moaning like buggery about the lack of rugged highland mountains etc!

Anything for a quiet life I suppose.

We are going here first and then to shieling also in Mull. The children will love so that's what counts I suppose!

Oooh I love Mull

Have a fab time (and start surreptitious research for further afield next year... then you can start dropping hints asap )
