Clever storage ideas for tents

chicaguapa · 30/07/2010 20:32

I'm a little bit anal with tidiness. Not in an OCD way or one that's completely inappropriate for camping . But I have dreams of a lovely, tidy, organised tent with shelves and everything off the floor. The last time we went camping, our suitcase stayed in the corner and the contents gradually spread out around it.

So please share your clever storage ideas, of which I am sure there are many .

Thanks.

We have two big boxes, where everything can be shoved unceremoniously.

And beautiful floaty scarves to drape artistically over the top.

Maybe you're looking for organisation though, with which I can not help...

chicaguapa · 31/07/2010 10:18

Tidiness at the expense of organisation would be ok. Just don't want the contents of the suitcase spread across the tent floor as one of DC wanted something at the bottom!!

We have the Gelert double "wardrobe" , it has 4 shelves on each side, these can be removed, and the bases unzipped to make hanging space, just got it at half price from ebay.

HTH.

You have to be strict about access to the suitcase and tidy in the morning and nighttime. I carrier bag everything now so all of dd's tshirts are in one bag, socks in another etc. I like the idea of outfit in one bag and will do that this year.

I also section suitcase so everyones stuff is in a row.

We use the supermarket reusuable bags and everyone has 1 each for clothes. Easy to chuck things in and for the kids to find their own bits. But we only stay on a site for 3-4 nights before moving on, so anything more would be a PITA.

scurryfunge · 31/07/2010 10:33

I bring a hanging rail for inside our awning and use plastic drawers as a chest of drawers.

chicaguapa · 31/07/2010 12:00

Thanks. I'm now thinking of using a plastic box with a lid for each person for their clothes and bits so DC can find their own stuff easily. They can stack nicely in the corner of the tent and the hard lids can double up as a surface. I have got some S hooks which I can use to hang up the dry towels and coats. DH has asked me if I'm enjoying playing Wendy houses!

We have a collapsible shelf thing on which Im going to shove everything. Then any amount of rummaging won't result in the same ungodly mess that now on oir bedroom floor (dh couldn't find his belt this morning )

Milliways · 01/08/2010 17:15

Collapsible storage crates are fab.

We use one to store dirty dishes in, to carry to eashing up etc.

Others can be used for toys ot general stuff, and they fold flat when not in use.

Clothes stay in the bedroom pods, with a spare bag for dirt stuff to go into.

gruber · 01/08/2010 17:19

Keep a spare laundry bag for dirty clothes. Then it's easier to sort at end of holiday.

I second plastic crates, they are so useful (and can fold them flat to pack. Also we took loads of big bags, had 1 for wet clothes, 1 for walking boots etc, one for jumpers so it was easy to find (and we left the welly bag in car as it didn't rain! - saves you unpacking them out of your bag. )

MrsDinky · 01/08/2010 18:45

Another fan of collapsible crates here, but they don't stack, so you need a fair amount of floor space. Also a pop-up laundry basket to shove all the dirty stuff in is v.useful for any holiday, not just camping.

I also use a lot of those canvas fold up bags you get for about £1 in supermarkets, the sort that have rigid bases, keep stuff like wellies, trainers, kids books, games etc in, and they are easy to shove into smallish spaces round the car when it is full to bursting

IfYoureHappyAndYouKnowIt · 01/08/2010 22:19

Usually have stackable boxes - everyone has one for clothes, use a couple for food and for books/games. Insert the coolbox in the stacked crates in the car. Stackable boxes can also be used for washing up.

We use collapsible crates to store books, games, colouring stuff, etc and pop up laundry bags - 1 per family member plus an extra one in a different colour for dirty washing. We got the crates from Homebase and the pop ups from Dunelm. They work a treat!

Lovesdogsandcats · 03/08/2010 14:04

I suffer the same affliction - i hate mess. We leave all the clothes in ikea bags in the car, so the tent stays fairly tidy!

SixtyFootDoll · 03/08/2010 14:30

A hint I got from here which i am going to use is putting each family members clothes in sparate zipped laundry bags with a spaare for dirty ones.
Am taking a plastic lidded box to keep fodstuff in.
Also have a hanging shelf unit that i picked u in Dunelm.

chicaguapa · 03/08/2010 17:23

Thanks! Lots of ideas there. We don't have space in the pods for clothes etc so will have to store everything in the living area.

I've now got some boxes from Sainsburys as they are on offer, we have one each for clothes and then just a pop-up laundry basket for everyone for dirty clothes. We also now have a big plastic box for kitchen stuff, which I will be able to just put in the garage between trips, and a plastic box for food (we are going to the New Forest and have to keep it away from horses!!). I have two foldable crates for storage whilst we are there and have got one of those hanging storage things from IKEA. So hopefully that'll be enough to keep everything off the floor.

And I've bought two picnic blankets to use as a carpet and a luggable loo. What more does a family need for a weekend eh?

Earthymama · 04/08/2010 11:57

Here we go, then, SixtyFootDoll,

chicaguapa · 04/08/2010 12:27

Does a washing up bowl count?
