Camping food without shopping

going · 29/07/2010 15:11

I'm so fed up of shopping and really don't want to do any food shopping when camping.

We will have porridge with longlife milk for breakfast and eat lunch out. Need dinner ideas.

I need some inspiration of store cupboard foods we can take with us.

So far...

Pasta with tomato and tuna

M&S tinned chicken curry and rice

Tinned soup

Any other ideas?

Why don't you freeze two meals before you go and use them for the first two nights?

We're having spag bol and chicken korma for the first two nights.

SixtyFootDoll · 29/07/2010 16:39

marks place. off camping next saturday!

going · 29/07/2010 16:49

Will do the frozen meal for the first night. Not sure about keeping food cool enough for a second night as we don't have a cool box.

tuna bean salad (tinned beans)

Tinned chilli with tortillas

Corned beef hash (veg will keep)

You can make a really nice chilli with Princes Stewed Steak in gravy. Add tinned tomatoes and kidney beans and a packet of chilling seasoning mix and just break up the chunks of meat as it cooks. Have it in tortillas with salad a grated cheese if you haven't the space or inclination to cook rice, or you could chuck some rice in and add a tin of water and cook it all together.

It may be a bit tacky but Pasta n Sauce! You can always add some fresh veg to bulk it out a bit. The cheese and broccoli one is nice with.added red peppers, courgettes and mushrooms.

Aldi are great. They do microwaveable rice which you can also sling in a pan, packets of risotto, filled pasta etc, all of which are under £1 - if your children like hot dogs their bockwurst are great too.

onepieceoflollipop · 03/08/2010 21:33

Omelette, baked beans (or tinned peas if you can face them; I can't!) then send someone to find local chip shop and have chips with it.

zippy539 · 03/08/2010 21:34

Just tested Savoury Rice out on the dc's tonight for this very reason...

zippy539 · 03/08/2010 21:35

Also planning on baked pots with tuna mayo. Good if you can have a camp fire for the baked potatoes - everything else is almost in a tin.

Orangesarenottheonlyfruit · 03/08/2010 21:43

Oh, oh, me sir (waves hand enthusiastically), you can buy these risotto packets that have dried mushrooms in them so all you do is add water or left over white wine and some slightly knackered cheese and bob's-your mother's-brother lush supper.

Also pre-cooked swedish meatballs are great, they last for days and you can add a can of spciy sauce to pasta and bingo!

Other than that, I did tuna pasta one night and sausage casserole with one of those packet sauces one night, was all good baby.

Can you tell I've just got back from a week's camping???!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 04/08/2010 08:07

couscous is excellent for one burner cooking. Boil up the kettle, but don't put it onto the couscous until you are nearly ready for it so it doesnt go cold. Then you can heat the meatballs or whatever (we have been known to add courgette, mushroom and chilli to tinned meatballs and simmer for a bit to make a spicey thing for couscous)

lisad123isgoingcrazy · 04/08/2010 08:16

For puds get a banana and cut a small slit in it, place is a strip of chocolate and cover in tin foil, then place in fire

overmydeadbody · 04/08/2010 08:22

Couscous with a tin of chickpeas, sultanas, and chopped up peppers and tomatoes and cucumbers is nice and store cupboard.

Baked beans and a fried egg on toast

Pasta with tuna and tomato sauce

snig · 04/08/2010 08:23

pasta and pesto maybe with chopped sausage (pepporami or something like that. have a nice camping trip.

overmydeadbody · 04/08/2010 08:27

the pasta n sauces are great for this reason

Also, cambell's condensed chicken and white wine soup makesa reasonably pasta sauce.

If I where you I'd go to your local supermarket and browse their tinned section and get a nice variety of tinned stuff that you can sling together with some carbs.

Olives are good too

Thanks for all of the tips!

DId think about rissoto pronto as used to ea the mushroom one quite often but can't seem to find it anymore.

Will definatley get some cous cous and look at swedish meatballs.

Another pud idea - smores. Place a few choccy buttons on a digestive biscuit, toast a marshmallow, pop it on top and sandwich with another biscuit. Even more yummy washed down with hot chocolate!

going · 04/08/2010 12:54

mmmm that does sound good womblingfree, kids wil love that. No campfire but can use gas ring!

OP posts:
womblingfree · 04/08/2010 15:59

We'll be using gas ring too. Am going to try it with cadburys caramel buttons!
