If you have a smallish tent where do you cook in the rain?

DH is suggesting he could hold an umbrella over my head....
We have a Orchy, so not at all tiny, but I wouldn't use a trangia inside.
I thought about getting kingpoles and making the door into a canopy, but then maybe the weather would get into the tent a bit much?
I would happily go to the pub instead, but dc will want breakfast (and I love my tea).

You should never ever cook inside a tent or too close to it. Really, you shouldnt.

I'm going to have to echo that. We have an enormous tent and we always cook outside in the rain.

Not only is there an obvious fire risk, but you will also harm the waterproofing of your tent.

we have a shelter that was sold as a fisherman's shelter which we put up if it's raining.

utility tent or tarp

We utility tent for long trips and tarp for short ones.

Gazebo thing?

Ineed2 · 28/07/2010 20:43

A vango large porch/sun canopy [thats a laff]
about £35 on ebay at the moment.

4andnotout · 28/07/2010 20:46

We use a Quechua tarp and windbreaks as a shelter.

mybabywakesupsinging · 28/07/2010 23:32

the porch thing looks possible but still a bit "in the tent" for me.
A tarp might be good (just googled) - do you fasten yours to the tent, slubber, or set it up separately?

quechua tarp £20 at decathlon...v tempting...if I buy one do you think that will mean it does not rain all holiday?

Tarps are great, and the quechua one gets good reviews and is great value.

Really versatile bit of kit imo, we take ours down onto the beach and use it as a sun/wind/rain shelter too.

We can't attach ours to our tent but not sure if I'd want to anyway. I like having all the kitchen/flammable stuff a distance away from the main tent.

Boiling water in the rain is fine as there's a lid on the pot and rain doesn't affect trangias (or a good-going fire - unless it is torrential). Otherwise, you can rig a tarp up using branches or poles

mybabywakesupsinging · 29/07/2010 15:31

The rain won't put the trangia out but it may extinguish me somewhat.
quechua tarp it is then...
thanks all
