Can I ask a very stupid question about cooking when you camp in England?

this may sound like a foolish question but I have only ever camped in very hot countries and never here in England.

What I am not sure about is how you cook here. When I lived abroad and camped, we could just make bbqs all the time or open fires. I'm not sure that's allowed here.

Wandered into a camping shop and they had all sorts of gas bottles for cooking. I imagine you use a primitive stove/kettle jobby for this. Is this what everyone does? Or do you like open pits for fires too?

that's brave lol. I can't imagine camping in the cold weather but I expect I will discover this over here at some point ;-).

My son loves fishing and some of the camp sites here seem perfectly situated for fishing. In fact, lots in Scotland but I expect I will need to be a tad braver before I undertake camping there!

Not comprehensive, but here is a list of campsites that does allow campfires. I only camp if I can make a fire, but is not too fussed about anything else.

Butterfly - can I ask you is the cobb ove good please? Just been looking at these!

Batteryhuman · 25/07/2010 11:26

We use a 2 ring gas burner and have just invested in a cobb. A gas bottle lasts us about 2 weeks of breakfasts, dinners and lots of coffees. I love a campfire but so many sites don't allow them

mybabywakesupsinging · 25/07/2010 20:44

We use a trangia too. Takes up no space in our super-full boot.

No, you don't put the trangia on top of the gas bottle, the trangia uses meths, the gas bottles are for camping gaz etc type stoves - each one uses a different type - see for example the 'bistro' which is just one ring. Big gas canisters are v expensive but you keep them and get refills.

we have a gas stove and a 'bucket barbeque' - usually the bbq is acceptable at most campsites as it has small legs keeping it off hte ground so it doesn't scorch the grass.

we're in scotland if that changes things - the presence of the midges mean that bbq or wood smoke is welcomed as it's the only thing that keeps them away. might not be the same in england.
