And I am SO excited!
Got mah tent, mah roofbox, mah bike rack... no idea how we're going to fit it all in, I'm still at the 'piles of crap all over the living room' stage not the actual 'managing to close the boot' stage!

One final question - can anyone tell me much about the relative prices of nappies, wipes & formula in Belgium and France? Are they loads more expensive?

Lucky you. Don't know about Belgium, France was fine pricewise last time we were there - but not sure how the euro exchange is at the moment. Lots of nice French brands though - I got some wonderful nappy cream that I can't get over here.

IIRC you can't buy nappy disposal bags on the continent (anti plastic bag legislation?) I'd take a bargain pack of those with you.

Just gor back from France and I would say that most things are expensive out there! Sorry! My advice is take what you can.

IloveJudgeJudy · 22/07/2010 12:25

I would say that all toiletries cost more in France so you need to take your nappies, etc with you. I would also take formula as you can't be sure that they will stock the one your child likes!

If that means that you don't have much room, then pack fewer clothes, but take some washing powder with you and do a wash every week. Nearly every site has a washer and dryer.

I'm very envious of FIVE WEEKS. I hope you have a lovely time.

we were in france in june, nappies were about the same as here but everything else seemed MEGA expensive. coke was 2.80 euro a can at pretty much every service we stopped (did not buy it). 5 weeks sounds fab though!!

thereistheball · 23/07/2010 11:12

Pampers in France are twice as expensive as the UK: up to 13e (15e from corner shop). You can get nappy bags but they are 2.50 for 50, instead of 28p for 100 (Sainsbury's Basics). I'd stock up as much as possible before you leave.

Have a fabulous time!

piratecat · 23/07/2010 11:15

sounds like you will be better off taking the nappies, esp for 5 weeks worth.

I'm back!
Well, I stuffed EVERY gap in the car & roofbox with nappies, glad I did as they were really expensive in Belgium (even the cheapest, own brand ones were about twice as much as branded nappies here) and even in France were pricey, especially as no multipack / BOGOF offers on them in French supermarkets :(
Formula was so expensive! I wish I had taken more with me. But it did give me an incentive to start cutting down on bottles. We were still on five a day when we left, now down to three, although now supply of baguettes and croissants has slowed there may be mutiny in the ranks...
Weirdly, baby wipes were relatively cheap - three euros but they come in packs of 100.
Eating out still relatively cheap (as long as you are happy to have plat du jour we found loads of places doing three or four courses for eleven euros) but everything else was expensive. Damn exchange rate!
BTW I don't use nappy bags... is that really scummy of me? I just roll them up, use the tags to close them and throw them in the bin. I figured it's just one more thing for me to forget to put in the change bag really.
