I have never camped there, but know st Ives very well, dp was born there, Mil still lives there.

The beaches in st. Ives are lovely (Pothminster more familyish, Porthmeor more surfy) both will be absolulety packed if the weather is good though. St. Ives itself is gorgeous with lots of nice shops though it has got quite expensive and 'boutiquey' in the last 5-10 years. Hayle is nearby and has miles of wonderful open beaches with sand dunes and tonnes of space.

There are two small supermarkets in st. Ives itself, (can't remember what they are atm, they change hands alot) there is also a large Tesco's a few miles out of town.

In terms of things to do, we visit several times a year but mainly just do beaches and gardens (Trebah and Trevano are my favorites and the kids (6 and 2) love them). The Eden project is pretty cool if you have never been, though I imagine it would be pretty packed, we tend to go in winter for the skating.

I have stayed here twice, the campsite is lovely and the toilets and showers are really good. You might have to queue for ten mins for a shower at tea time though. The bar does ok food, pub quiz nights etc and there are plenty of things for kids to do I think - ours wasn't born last time we stayed. There's a games room and a take away place that does breakfast butties and pizza at night and the pool is good.

There is a bus into St. Ives I think it's every hour - well worth getting as it is impossible to find anywhere to park there and it runs until late at night. There's also a pub about a five minute walk away from the campsite that does nice food. There are walks that you can do along the coast from the campsite, they have leaflets in the reception, and the camp shop is good, has a lot of variety and sells gas and rents frozen cool packs.
