Which double burner stove should I buy?

I would like to run it off one of those blue gas bottle things as I think this would be cheapest fuel? As you can see I don't know much about them! Which is a good one to get...has a good 'burn time'/efficient to use? It would be good if it was relatively compact too....

Does anybody still use a Royal Double cast burner camping stove? I read about them over on Alpkit.com...they said they still had a soft sopt for them and that they were pratically indestructable (and last a long time) I know nothing about them, size etc.

As you can see I really need some help on this and quite quickly as it is only a couple of weeks before we are potentially going camping. (If our tent arrives/nice weather!)

I (and lots of other people) have a Coleman Camping Chef it is perfectly fine, though the toaster is pointless, esp. if you are using the rings as well.

The Royal Double is this I have never used one but it looks very sturdy. I do like it that mine packs away in to it's own case and particually as it means I can easily cover it up at night as it lives outdoors while we camp.

If I was buying again I would buy a SunnCamp, our friends who we camp with have this one and it is just nicer than ours. Somehow more study and efficent looking, however mine is fine and I won't be replacing it.

We find a bottle of gas (907 size) lasts about 2 weeks when used to cook breakfast (porridge or fry up) everyday, evening meal everyday (though a few nights we would eat out) and endless cups of tea.

It is worth remembering fhe initial price to buy gas is quite expensive (about £45ish) but that refills are much cheaper (about £15).

If you are only camping for weekends I would recommend 2 singles - they have them at GO outdoors for £4.99 just now - they run off the arerosol cans, which last about 2 hours - we got 9 tins for £10, so for an occasional camper much better value

poppyboo · 15/07/2010 14:13

I am definately looking for a double burner as we will be camping for 4 - 7 nights at any one time so I think two single will be no good for what we need.

The suncamp one looks good but i should have aid i don't want a grill...i wonder if they make them without the grill b/c they do look nice and sturdy!

oh, and wheretheWildThingsWere I was expecting that sort of initial cost on the gas bottle as my sister bought one a couple of years ago and it was £50 to start off with.

WhereTheWildThingsWere · 15/07/2010 14:22

Ta-da!

Though you would then need a separate winshield and they do tend to blow over a lot as they are not attached, also you wouldn't have the cover.

WhereTheWildThingsWere · 15/07/2010 14:24

Winshield? windshield.

Tbh we didn't want the grill either, we just wanted the built in shield and the case and cover and you can't get one without t'other, so useless additional grill it was.

poppyboo · 15/07/2010 14:27

WhereTheWildThingsAre you're good!

Wow great price!

My sister has actually just bought a suncamp one bt with 3 burners which i don't think we will need. It looks nice though:
www.yeomansoutdoors.co.uk/products/stoves-heaters/double-burner-stoves/sunngas-gourmet-3-burner-stov e-00000.aspx

plus the 3 burners would make it bigger I guess and space isn't on our side!

The fact that you can stand up and cook looks great ...but then for me, I have two young children and i'm not sure how safe that would be for us.

Any thoughts appreiciated!

WhereTheWildThingsWere · 15/07/2010 14:37

Can you use the ones on legs on the ground too? Something I have never known....

When we go away for a week or more we have ours set up on a full kitchen stand like this, I don't think I cook cook on the floor for a week. But we do when we just go for a night or two and I like the flexibility to be able to do both.

Smithagain · 15/07/2010 15:00

I have a Camping Gaz double burner with a grill underneath.

It belonged to my parents - bought in the 1970s, used for 15 years, stored for 20+ years, dusted off and works as good as new.

They still make them and they still look exactly the same. Life this in fact! So if you're looking for reliability and track record, that could be good bet!

Smithagain · 15/07/2010 15:04

wildthings.... we use ours on the ground, and we have a little folding stool like this to sit on while we cook. It's perfectly comfy.

WhereTheWildThingsWere · 15/07/2010 15:20

I will sit on a blanket and cook for a couple of nights.

But I am a frighteningly soft camper, any longer then that and I want my kitchen with the pots stacked neatly underneather and all the utensils hanging on the side.

I have a cupboard for all my crockery and food ffs.

Smithagain · 15/07/2010 16:03

(Have looked wistfully at such things, but know that the grief caused by trying to pack them would outweigh the benefit. We have a rather small car!)

We have Really Useful boxes, which serve as packing crates/cupboards/tables/food prep surfaces/towel drying racks ... ... ... ...

poppyboo · 15/07/2010 19:41

So I've found this www.leisureshopdirect.com/caravan/gas/product_24477/Sunngas_Gourmet_2_stove_delux.aspx?aff=122# do you think the legs on it make it more dangerous with young children? while i would like to cook at full height i wonder if i would be safer with cooker on floor....I'm not sure

OP posts:
WhereTheWildThingsWere · 15/07/2010 20:10

I don't think it is dangerous with children, personally I have never left a lit stove unatended when camping, whoever is cooking usually just settles down next to it to have a glass of wine keep an eye on it. Last year we had 2 18 mo toddlers and a 5 yo. The year before a 5yo, 4yo, 2yo and a crawling 7mo.

The only problem I can see with the one you have linked to is if you are wanting it to be 'full height' as it is only 38cm off the ground , I think the picture is a bit deceptive.

Smithagain · 15/07/2010 20:26

Agreed that the golden rule is that the person cooking sits right next to the cooker, is not interrupted and has the right to bellow at anyone who comes to close, including other people's children who randomly stroll into the vicinity of one's tent (or is that just me?)

As far as I'm concerned, it's a major perk of being the "camp cook". The inalienable right to tell everyone to "b*er off, I'm cooking"

maxybrown · 16/07/2010 11:09

We have this one Just used link from a random site. Completely different again!

poppyboo · 18/07/2010 09:03

Thanks for you input everyone, now I just need to make a decision

now, here is another question, do I need a grill? Will I use one? I didn't think i wanted one and now i don't know...

We're a vegetarian family so won't need to grill meat or anything. The children mostly have cereal for brekky, they occasionally eat toast..... it is worth getting one just for toast ?

sorry for the stupid questions, i'm rubbish at making my mind up!

OP posts:
poppyboo · 18/07/2010 09:15

OK, so here are the three I'm thinking about:

WhereTheWildThingsAre suggested this one which I like the look of:
www.springfield-camping.co.uk/SunnCamp/Camping+Equipment/Grill+Master+Double+Burner+%26+ Grill/574/pc

My sister suggested this one which has three hobs and fold down grill, would I use/need three hobs? I don't know
www.yeomansoutdoors.co.uk/products/stoves-heaters/double-burner-stoves/sunngas-gourmet- 3-burner-stove-00000.aspx

Or this one i found in Argos for £29.00 but the reviews say it doesn't come with regulator (whatever that i, seriously i am clueless about this)
www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/3402849/Trail/searchtext%3ECAMPING+STOVES.ht m

What do you think?

OP posts:
poppyboo · 18/07/2010 09:17

Oh, I just wanted to say, the price difference doesn't matter b/c we will be going camping hopefully a couple of times a year so want to make an investment so it need to be the right one!

OP posts:
poppyboo · 18/07/2010 09:19

oh, and with the sunngas 3 burner stove it can be used with legs on or legs off so I like the flexibility.

OP posts:
poppyboo · 18/07/2010 09:31

LOL, it's a sunday morning so I know I am talking to myself, have just spoken to DH and think we are going to go for the Sunngas gourmet 3 burner stove with flip down grill for toast because although pack size is 15 cm longer due to third burner it is a lot slimmer so will be nice and flat in back of car. we like the fact can have legs on legs off and I've got grill for toast should any of us get toast craving.

OP posts:
WhereTheWildThingsWere · 18/07/2010 10:24

Glad you have talked yourself into a decision.

Seriously you would never be able to use those under grill things for anything more substantial than toast anyway.

I can't remember whether stoves usually come with or without a regulator, if yours is without they are very cheap and easy to get.

poppyboo · 19/07/2010 17:55

does anyone know where else i can buy the Sunngass Gourmet triple burner from which runs off gas? Yeomans where i was going to get it from can't deliver it quick enough!

OP posts:
poppyboo · 23/07/2010 14:27
