8 nights at river dart country park

Have just returned, well yesterday, from a great holiday at River dart. Despite arriving to find that the Picnic meadow [which I booked] was not open until the school hols [except at the weekends], we were given by the site manager a great pitch at the top of the site slightly away from the last official pitch. He called it 77a. They were so helpful, the site is spotless, showers boiling, so much to do we hardly left the site other than to do a mini tour of Dartmoor.
There was a lovely mix of people from all over europe. We will return, the kids want to go with another family next time so they can have even more fun. Good luck to anyone else going over the summer, we loved it and hope you do too.

Ooh - glad you had a good time. We're going there for the first time this weekend (for 8 nights too) and I can't wait. Looks brill and the kids will love it.

Oh great - we are going in August for 10 days! Can't wait, longest time that we have ever been camping in one place.

Great to hear a good review. We are staying in the picnic meadow for 7 nights mid august.

Can I ask a few questions ? Would you say it's worth taking bikes or not ? How hilly is the surrounding area and how close is the nearest town / village for supplies.
Are there any must takes apart from usual camping gear, lots of extra towels and wetsuits?

TIA

Nikki

sorry nikki just checked back, it is hilly, from the picnic meadow to the lake and adventure playground is flat, but up to the pool and shop is quite steep. It's a narrow lane to nearset town, Ashburton and quite steep in places. We took bikes for the kids to ride arround the site cos it's quite spaced out, mine love their bikes so they were a must for us.
Shoes for the playlake it is stoney on the bottom so shoes are a must, beach shoes are perfect and they sell them in the site shop if you can't get them before you go but old PE pumps would do just as well. There is a dryer for drying towels if you get stuck [£3 I think], we were lucky and dried ours in the tent porch.
Hope that helps and have fun!!

Thanks for that. I think we'll take the kids bikes and leave ours at home. We have gator bars to attatch their bikes to ours but it not much fun dragging them up hills
