We are travelling from IOW to Teesside and thought to break up a 5/6 hr journey we would camp at cotswolds (dc 3 and 7) and a miserable dh who needs luxuries as not a natural camper so quiet on a night is a must also. Anyone recommend anywhere for 2 nights? Lincoln Park is fully booked so a no go. Or looking at a map of britain anyone know anywhere on the way up they can recommend (about 2-3hrs in). Also we thought of staying 1 night in new forrest - anyone recommend one with good facilities but not the nude one

Try Cotswold View near Charlbury, about 8 miles from the A34

We live near here, its a really nice campsite.

Also we've stayed locally in Diamond Farm Caravan and Camping, near Bletchingdon.

For New Forest Hollands Wood campsite is very popular, it is next to a road but if you camp on the far side of the property then you won't really hear it. Facilities are great.

If you are travelling from IOW to Teeside then i am a bit confused as to why you you want to stop at he Cotswolds as it is not on the way?? Surely your route would be up from Southampton/Portsmouth to reading (A38 i think) then M40/M69 (or M42) then onto M1.

Cotswolds would mean heading West out of your way and Teeside is a good 4 hrs from Cotswolds so wouldnt break up your journey that much.

I would reckon you would want Leicestershire as a good half way stop off area. Sorry i cant help wiht a campsite recommendation for here though.

The Yorkshire Sculpture Park off the M1 is an excellent lunch or break stop off though once you are a bit further North, it is v. close to motorway, nice cafe and loads of room for your children to charge around and burn off some energy after being cooped up in the car.

thehairybabysmum · 13/07/2010 10:41

Sorry it's the A34 not the A38.

We are ferry from lymington - its a staright line on the map 1hr 55 to for example hardwick park (no availability there either) then 4hrs 22 back home so yes not half way btu better than doing 5hr 44 all in one shot hmmm perhaps your right though. I need a rethink dont i? Yes leicestershore is half way your right as we have booked a premier in for on the way down - i just want somewhere quiet and pretty - anyone recommend anywhere near Newark/ nottingham area?

We did IOW to Lincolnshire and stopped at Caravan club site Bladon Chains just outside Oxford - it was very nice HTH

clumber · 13/07/2010 11:05

How about the site in Clumber Park?

nappyzoneloveschinesefood · 13/07/2010 11:16

Yes i looked at clumber park but the reviews keep mentioning dogs, dogs and more dogs and it seems really busy -i am just on ukcc looking at somewhere near there thoug a bit quieter.... i know im picky

I've stayed at Clumber its not noisy, but I would have thought you needed to be a bit further south.(225 miles from Lymington) That will make the 2nd leg of your journey very long. It took us nearly 2hrs just from Sailsbury area to Lymington when we went. through the New Forest is very slow.

nappyzoneloveschinesefood · 13/07/2010 16:25

oh lordy im in a right quibble now then! I do think if we can get in we will stay a nigt at one of the new forrest sites then its on wards the next day (a saturday) to stay over another 1/2 nights to break up the rest.

If you're going to go through the cotswolds it would be worth camping at the cotswolds farm park, you get free entry into the farm park, a small camp site with basic facilities but clean and friendly.
Your children would love it.

Its the farm park often seen on countryfile as Adam Henson owns it.

We do the journey from south coast to York (not quite as far as teeside but similar-ish) quite often. We just do it in one hit with a 2 and 4 yr old though we always have a long lunch plus play stop.

If it was me i would either ditch the New Forest overnight stop and head up the country a couple of hours or so as you will have had a break on the ferry. Then yur onward journey is not so long the next day.

Otherwise i would just go for it after the nEW Forest overnigher but plan in a 2-3 hr stop for lunch/runaround at somewhere like the sculpture park.

nappyzoneloveschinesefood · 14/07/2010 10:18

you know hairy bum i cant get anywhere except new forrest so dh has said just that so i need a firm 2 night booking sorting for the new forrest - they all look a bit wild dont they? which is fine but i do need a shower!
