Cooking a big mixed stew

Hi I need some advice on counting calories

Most days I just weigh and measure my individual foods and eat a mixed plate for a meal.

sometimes though I want to cook say a bolognese sauce or curry and eat it for a few days.

How do you go about this ? Currently

  • add all the ingredients to get a total weight
  • Add up all the calories in those to give total number of calories
  • divide number of grams by calories to give calories per gram
  • weigh your portion and x by the above
  • Does the ingredients weigh the same once cooked? Should I use weight raw or cooked ?
so many questions…..thanks in advance

I use Nutracheck. I'd put all the ingredients in, then set the number of portions and go from there. Good luck!

Pasta eg will weigh more when it’s cooked but the extra weight is water so wouldn’t count.

Thanks for your replies! I’m going to look at Nutracheck and see if I’ve got the same results 😊

If it’s just you eating it then if you calculate the total calories for all the ingredients and divide by the number of meals you get that would balance out over the week.

if I’m making a big pot of something and the whole family is eating it I use nutracheck. You can measure the calories in the dry/raw ingredients, then weigh the cooked product total weight, then it will give you the calories per 100g or whatever. I guess the only stipulation is that you eat a balance of all the contents, eg. If you are making a chicken casserole but you only pick out the veg for your serving, obviously that wouldn’t be accurate. But it’s a reasonable estimate based on what went in. If you weigh the pot or the slow cooker dish before you start cooking, once it’s cooked you just stick the whole pot on the scales for the total weight.

if using rice or pasta I always count cooked weight and weigh a portion onto my plate.
