Dried or boiled rice which to weigh?

I am really confused. I'm not sure if I should be weighing the dried weight of rice before cooking or the weight after cooking. The calorie difference is big.

What are you doing? Thanks.

I always weighed and logged cooked rice. 100g of dried rice would probably feed 3 of us, compared to 100g of cooked rice (or whatever)

I do 60g of dried rice per person and use those calories. It’s probably not as accurate as weighing out the rice when it has been cooked though. I use the dried weight as I know that’s a satisfactory portion in this house anyway, and it saves me cooking too much rice when I weigh it out before cooking.

Are you tracking in an app? You can log either boiled or dry so long as you select the same one as you are weighing so that the nutritional info is correct.

I tend to weigh it cooked and log that, I use nutracheck so I would search for boiled rice. It's easier if you are cooking rice for several people.

If you weigh it dry then it's harder to portion accurately if you cook more than just your own rice.

That's a good point.

that depends on what your recipe/meal plan says. If you are using a a tracking app it would tell you the calories for both and you could go with what would fit your target calories.

If you are cooking for only yourself weigh it dry and track as dry (so you have no wastage) If you are one of several people eating it’s easier to go by the cooked weight, especially if other family members are getting bigger portions than you.

Always measure uncooked ingredients.

Boiled rice is a mix of rice and water. Water has weight but no calories, you need calories and macros from rice.

So if you have dry 100 gm rice, it will produce a lot more cooked rice as cooked rice will have water absorbed in it. So 100 gm of dry rice has more calories than 100 gm of boiled rice as it also has weight of water.

Boiled rice calories cannot be accurate as some people make it more soggier than others, which can impact the weight.
