Calories in porridge

I can't find an answer on Google and hoping you can help.

My bowl of cooked porridge is made from half semi skimmed milk and half water. It weights 160g when cooked. Approx how many calories is this please?

How much do the oats weigh before they're cooked?
I use Nutracheck for calorie counting. Makes it so much easier!

Yes you want to know the weight of the raw oats. It could be pretty high, I’m always shocked by things like porridge!

You need to input the weight of the dry oats and the mls of milk your using. This will give you the total calories in your porridge

It you're going to calorie count you should get an app like my fitness pal. It's free and it has all that stuff in it.

I've used My Fitness Pal for calorie tracking - it uses barcodes on products to show calorie content.

It can be a bit time consuming to start, but it works. I adjusted the quantity to weigh 1g rather than 100g, it makes it easier to be more precise.

Nutracheck says 160g of cooked porridge made with semi skimmed milk is 134 calories. It will be slightly less if made with half water but something to base an estimate on.

Thanks for all the replies. I'm using My fitness Pal but the calories seem very low compared to when I google. I couldn't work out whether they were basing the calories on dry or uncooked weights. I'm measuring approx 60-70g dry oats.

The particular oats I used this morning are 243 calories for 65g of dry oats, you would then add in however many ml of milk.

60 -70g of dry oats is a pretty large portion. A normal serving would be 40g.

I use 45g of Tesco scottish oats (dry) and my fitness pal says 171k cal

Yes, it's a large bowl but it keeps me going until about 3 or 4pm without snacking. I had been entering it at 265 Calories on My Fitness Pal but I'm wondering whether the calories should be double that?

254 calories for 40-45g (half cup) dry porridge with 1 cup semi skimmed milk. That's what is in MFP from when I used it.
Just weigh things and use the barcode function on mfp.

Thanks. I'll record it at 294 and use the bar code when I buy more porridge as I decanted the oats into a container and no longer have the packaging. Relieved that it's not coming in at 500Cals.

I'm 54 (height 5'3) and this is the first time I've calorie counted - I've never dieted in my life. Weight always managed itself as I cycled to work but lockdown and WFH changed that. I'm fasting 15:9 but had so few calories yesterday I felt quite wobbly this morning. I was genuinely full last night but had less than 1000 cals across 2 large bowls of porridge with raspberries, blueberries and a 2 egg omelette with spinach. Going to stick with 2 bowls of porridge today but have a larger lunch of mackerel, avocado, tomatoes, bread. I was 10.5 on Friday and weighted in at 10.2.6 this morning. Aiming to get down to pre-lockdown weight of 9.4 and then the weather should be warmer to start my cycling again and have a more balanced diet.

Have you worked out your tdee to see how many calories you need for your height, weight, age and activity levels? Just type tdee calculator into google. My tdee is high as attached due to the amount of exercise I do. So many people seem to follow the 1200 calories diet but it's an arbitrary number rather than one based on personal statistics. I lost weight eating around 1750 calories.

If you know where you bought them or which brand then the nutritional info is usually online so you can find the calories that way

Yes, I did, thank you and it was depressing. It is about 1650 to maintain my weight as I'm only averaging at 5K steps and spend a lot of my time sat at a computer. It's no wonder that my weight has crept up as I've been eating so many snacks which I thought nothing of. I've set a target of 1350 but stopping before then if I'm feeling full. I may go a little more gently on the fasting though as I'm finding that difficult to fit around my work and kids. Thanks again everyone.

Sainsburys own brand - so I reckon it's 217 Calories of oats and 77 of semi skimmed milk.

@Scarecrow2016 do you watch tv in the evening? If so I highly recommend getting a gym ball and sitting on it to bounce while you watch tv. My fitbit recognises it the same as an elliptical at the gym but it counts as steps too so it's an easy way to increase steps. I did it for 2 hours on Monday while watching two episodes of something and clocked up around 7000 steps. It's great for your core too plus it's not easy to snack and bounce.
