I am going back to basics and going to count calories so how many do I need to have? I also wonder so much is made of protein whey powder these days and I have got in the habit of adding it to things like overnight oats etc so how does that work is it good to still go for high protein?

Well what are you calorie counting for? If it's to loose weight then I'd say inbetween 1600 to 1900 per day of you're female.

I'm not sure what you are asking about the protein powder. How does what work? What do you want it to do?

We need to know height, weight etc - I am short and can only have about 1200 cals to stand any chance of losing. I would get a My Fitness Pal account and it will work it out for you and you can get accurate kcals for what you're eating.

There's an online calculator, you put in your age, weight, height, level of activity. It gives you your Basal Metabolic rate, which is how many calories your body needs just to survive. The idea of women needing 2000 cals a day is a myth.

You can eat whatever you want, so carry on having protein powder if you want.
You can easily do a Google search to find out how many calories you need to lose weight.
I use the Nutracheck which works out your calorie allowance and tracks things like protein, fats, fibre etc. It is easy to enter what you are eating - you can often scan the barcode on the packaging and it automatically enters everything.

What are you trying to achieve? Protein powder is a supplement. Healthy diets don't need supplements. So if you're trying to cut calories, protein powder will add them.

The fuss about protein is that it stops you getting hungry in the way that eating carbs does. Can't you just eat a diet with enough protein in the first place?
