Do you calorie count vegetables?

So I track all fruit and also some veg - anything that comes from a can like tomatoes or sweetcorn or roasted veg like parsnips. Also if I eat vegetables outside of meals eg carrots and houmous for a snack I'll count that. But if I'm having salad either on the side or in a sandwich I don't bother. It hasn't hindered my weight loss as I assume that nobody eats spinach or cucumber in large enough quantities to go over your target but I just wondered what everyone else does 😁

The vast majority of vegetables have lots of fibre and water and few calories. So they don't 'count'. Sweetcorn, peas etc. probably should be depending on how strict you are.

BeCruelToBeKind · 26/06/2023 20:31

I do count, just because it’s such an automatic routine to log everything into MFP & my plate is on the scales anyway. I don’t often look at the figures that come up though.

Innocents4321 · 26/06/2023 20:34

Well it’s which one and how much. Root veg are different beasts to greens. Peas as well have lots of starch/carbs in ditto sweetcorn. So I would take that into account

BHRK · 26/06/2023 20:35

No

therealmccoy1234 · 26/06/2023 20:35

Peas are the food of the devil so no need for me to worry about them 🤣

If it's getting to the point you're logging broccoli or lettuce and things like that it's bordering on obsessive. As someone mentioned potatoes and sweetcorn should be counted but anything leafy and green you're just wasting your time.

MushMonster · 27/06/2023 06:13

Yes! Many have nutrients but little calories, but others....

Must include in the counting to be aware

tackling · 27/06/2023 07:12

Yes - but it's easy to log using preset meals, I think logging every random ingredient every time would get old very quickly.

I worked out that I eat around 400 calories from veg most days (carrots, leeks, broccoli, courgette, green beans, spinach, cauliflower, tomatoes, sweetcorn, parsnip, peas) so added that as a "meal" and log it that way.

DH was put on a very low everything diet prior to surgery a while back, everything was tiny portions measured carefully but there were no limitations on leafy green veg at all. He had meals that consisted of a couple of spoonfuls of plain rice and an enormous bowl full of Brussels sprouts. Root veg, peas and beans on the other hand had to be measured out carefully. I am deducing from this that you could eat as much broccoli as you like and have no negative effects (other than to the atmosphere.)

Yes agreed. When I first started I was logging 6 slices of cucumber in a sandwich and then I just thought this is a bit daft! I obviously count things like potatoes, sweetcorn, parsnips, beetroot, cauliflower cheese 🤤 and if I'm having vegetables as the main part of my meal like a stir fry but pretty much never anything green.

Yes I do.

The vegetables I have eaten today add up to nearly 200 calories, missing logging that daily isn't going to be useful long term, that adds up to 1400 calories a week, a day's extra of a low calorie diet plan.

CattyCone · 27/06/2023 12:47

I don't input things like leaves, celery, cucumber, kale.

I do input root veg, sweetcorn, avocado, asparagus etc.

BeastOfBODMAS · 27/06/2023 14:46

I do, because I use MFP as a very detailed meal plan and I’m more likely to remember be arsed to cook all the veg if I’ve spent time logging it!

Struggllepiggle · 18/07/2023 17:28

I do but I don’t weigh it so it’s estimates.

If my weight loss stops I’ll tighten up on it.

DaisyWaldron · 18/07/2023 17:31

I do, because I want to make sure I'm eating enough veg and getting enough fibre and nutrients.

HotdogCat · 23/07/2023 20:18

I don’t weigh or track salad stuff, like leaves, cucumbers, radish, onions, as that only adds up to about 40 cals, but would track beetroot or something if I had that with my salad.

track all over veg though

DogSitterMum · 23/07/2023 22:29

Anything that goes in my mouth is tracked. Like @WeirdPookah I could easily go over my daily calorie aim by not tracking veg.

MantaKay · 26/07/2023 20:33

Depends. No dressing of any type, be it oil, or a vinaigrette, I don't count , so green beans, tomatoes, fennel..... When there is dressing or oil in a pan, I count.

Pickingmyselfup · 01/08/2023 08:44

I do but I'm not always exact. I might be a few grams over or I log my strawberries as blueberries.

This morning I was one gram over for avocado which ultimately isn't going to damage my weight loss. 10g over for avocado would but 10g over for broccoli isn't.

mondaytosunday · 01/08/2023 09:19

Yes. Even if it's a green salad that may be up to 30 calories, and some vegetables are quite calorific. I eat a lot of veg so it adds up.
