Maintaining without tracking

Is this possible?

I will say - my weight gain was down to pure gluttony and overeating. I wasn't an unhealthy weight, just heavier than I would like and uncomfortable in clothes.

In an ideal world, I'd like to get to my target wait, continue to be mindful but not have to log every single thing that I consume.

In your experience, is this a fast track to getting back to square one?

Honestly, every time I stop tracking I put the weight back on. Every time I say it will be different, I will be more careful but bad habits creep in and I'm back to being 6st overweight within a couple of years.

How about having a weight range? So weigh yourself regularly but only go back to tracking if you hit a certain weight. I'm 2.5kg off my target and I think I'm going to spend a few weeks fully tracking at maintenence just to find my level, then aim to maintain without weighing all food but weighing myself at least weekly and going back into tracking at a deficit if I hit maybe 3kg higher than my target.

I think a few weeks of tracking at maintenence will help me work out what my natural weight fluctuations are, so then I'll know when it goes too high.

That's a really good idea, thank you

I have never managed it but certainly possible- there are loads of slim people who stay slim without tracking!
I would maybe start but cutting back on the tracking- maybe record the core elements of your meals but not bother with the veggies or very low calorie items. So, still track the bulk of what you're eating and any extras that would have previously sent you over your calorie goal.
So if you have banana on toast and a coffee for breakfast- just keep note of the bread and butter.
Chicken breast and salad for lunch with a cup of tea and an apple after- just record the chicken and maybe the heavier items, like if you have coleslaw etc .
Takeaway and glass of wine for tea- this is definitely something to 'track,' but maybe just think of it as an average 1000cals or something, instead of meticulously tracking every single thing.

Then.. if you maintain doing that, try without the tracking- just be conscious of each meal and still get on the scales regularly.

Personally, I don't find it realistic that we would track and record for the rest of our lives! Suppose its just doing it until healthy habits are ingrained!- which I haven't yet mastered!
