Tips for evening eating

I am just starting on counting calories again. However my big issue has always been eating lots on the evening and craving sweet food in the evening. So I usually manage to eat healthily and few full all day but by the end of the day I struggle not to snack. I’m not hungry at all in the evening, but I’m just so used to eating biscuits/cakes/crisps as I watch an episode of something, I am struggling to get out of the habit.

Any helpful hint or tricks to avoid the evening snacking?

Maybe you want the crunch and mindless chewing? One of my friends has celery sticks, carrots and pea pods in his fridge and just has that at hand while watching TV

Could you have a herbal tea, bit of dark choc and some walnuts?

or brush your teeth early?!

Resisting eating in the evening is hard for about a week and then I get out of the habit of it and stop craving it.

Don't have those snacks in the house.
Have a cup of tea instead.
Stay hydrated
Brush teeth early
Go for a long evening walk (if it ever stops raining)

You just stop. No replacing snacks with bits of carrot or some crap. Just stop. It's unnecessary. You will get used to it.

Have a good dinner full of protein and then you won't be hungry.

I snack less when I'm knitting, as I'm doing something else with my hands.

Go to bed early so that fridge is not so close.

Slimjimtobe · 31/03/2023 15:03

It’s hard

I usually have a gin and slim at the weekend and no snack or tea and two rich tea or leave the house and then I am late in

I agree with this. I tried literally not going downstairs! I would take everything I needed for the night upstairs when I did bedtime and stay up there! I'd have a bath, read a book, watch something on the tablet in bed etc. Sounds drastic but I didn't need to for long before I broke the habit.

It's definitely a habit-breaking thing. It takes about a week to break it. In the meantime, munch a carrot.

Frozen grapes, slices of apple, banana, popcorn, or if you have to then malteasers and I think hula hoops have lower calories than others. To be honest, I managed for months without eating after8, but it was by sitting on my hands (not literally) every night for about ten days, then I got used to reading or watching tv without snacking. Nearly chewed my hands off those ten days though, actually went to bed one night!!

Honestly it's just habit. I used to do it but set myself a cut off point of 6pm - no food or calorific drinks after that time. I brush my teeth at 6pm to reinforce this! For the first week it was really hard and I struggled but then it became completely normal. Now I genuinely hate snacking after dinner! 6pm is early so you could have a 7 or 8pm cut off. You soon get used to it.

Ooh I forgot- stick a Yogurt in the freezer! Takes forever to eat and goes down a … god I have to say treat but I’m sorry for rhyming😅

Actually I have noticed my need reducing already. Thank god! Think it’s just a routine and I feel like a can’t fully relax without a yummy treat

Why don't you factor a cup of tea and a sweet treat into your calories so you have it to look forward to? I do this a few nights a week.
