Peri Menopause weight loss difficulties

HandsOffMyCarrierBags · 13/01/2023 05:09

I'm peri menopausal and struggling to shift two stone.

I eat between 1500 and 1700 daily, mostly healthy. I have an active job and dog walk so generally do between 3 to 9 miles daily. I also do aerobic exercise, cycling a couple of hours both Saturday Sunday and swimming a couple of early morning swims mid week.

My weight rarely moves on the scales, it sits at 11 stone which according to the bmi is overweight

I suspect I need to cut back to 1200 or less? I enjoy food and not sure how to handle socials with cake.

I have really struggled to loose weight too ( I have been told I'm not menopausal but I remain unsure) have you tried keto or intermittent fasting? Both work well but it's a lifestyle choice and you need to be 100% on board which can be hard but you will definitely lose weight!

Just want to let you know 'I hear you'. I've decided to just eat healthy and be wherever that takes me.

Have a look at Dr Mary Claire Haver. She's an OBGYN selling a diet programme but has lots of free videos tackling this, science based! It seems that what you eat and when is more important, it's not just calories.

I'll also add that I think sugar is the demon of all foods for weight gain! I also think eating too much fruit can be detrimental so I would focus on whole foods and eat plenty of green veg and protein, stay distant from potatoes, rice, pasta or perhaps if these are your favourite dinner foods, save them for one day a week as a treat and see where that's takes you.

I am actually going to take my own advice too and try and shift my extra weight !!!

I'm peri and have lost over half a stone - intermittent fasting works best for me and having days where I eat very little. Getting used to not eating, hours without eating, one meal a day - I enjoy it tbh, especially the flat stomach feeling.

Things have changed for us now.

Love this. Im trying hard to take this approach too, after many years of disordered eating and exercising. Healthy food and exercise, no scales.

I have to agree with this.
I've been in meno for about 5-6 years and put on about 25kg! Was very fit and healthy before, running, going gym but that didn't seem to matter. I just couldn't shift the weight.
In November I started intermittent fasting, well, I do an eating pattern of 16:8
I have lost 4kg!! Its small but its a start. 😂

Good on you. Life is too short. I'm active, I eat well, but I'm not going to deny myself the odd treat. I'm eating mindfully. I've tried and it's not impossible to lose, but hard. If my body is healthy and doing all it's meant to do, that's good enough for me.

There's a brand new low carb boot camp just starting on here, I've found it brilliant with menopause weight loss.

So supportive and encouraging too
@BIWI runs it.

I shifted a very difficult 7lbs last year from 9st to 8.5st and I’m 49 and ‘very peri’. It was the last bit of fat on me and was hard. I concentrated on reducing my waistline rather than dropping weight though as this is my spot weight area. I got 5inches off my stomach. It felt wonderful. I did it by:

cutting out booze almost completely
reducing sugar
walking 60k steps per week
weights and yoga everyday (plank and invisible chair).
dinner before 6.30
home cooking no takeaways
drinking water
healthy breakfast, oat shake with berries for lunch
occasional gym and swim

I was doing it so I could get in a sequin jumpsuit for a festival. I have to say the work paid off I looked pretty good for a middle age woman! I felt 15 years younger.

have put it back on tho over Xmas. It took a year to get in shape and only four weeks to undo.

am back on the regime again though.

good luck it is hard but it will make you feel so much younger.
