Calories out

Satch76 · 03/05/2022 21:42

Just being nosey and interested in everyone's calories out per day.

I'm currently 1800 - 2000ish. Fairly sedentary job wfh but lots of running round after my son, out and about, shopping, parks, etc. I work 9.30-2.30.

Is my Fitbit being unreasonable?

What?

Coulddowithanap · 03/05/2022 22:40

My fitbit says I burn between 2300-3000 (depending on the day of course) I have a very physical job and on days off I will often do over 15000 steps walking the dog etc.

mrsmalcolmreynolds · 03/05/2022 22:41

I don't keep track particularly but must be 1900 to 2100 ish as an online calculator reckoned my replacement level was about 2200 (5'8", 69 kg and moderately active) and my weight is stable, maybe going down a little.

Fitness devices overestimate by anywhere from 40 to over 90% of calorie burn.

So whatever the FitBit/Apple Watch says is probably not strictly accurate, though they improve depending on how much data you give them.

My TDEE is around 1200. It bumps up to maybe 1500 on the days I ride horses.

DimplesToadfoot · 04/05/2022 00:04

According to my fitbit I did 100k steps in one day, in truth I hadn't moved from my sofa and had spent a few hours winding up a carrier bag full of yarn into neat balls.

The last time I clocked over to doing 10k steps in one day I was sat on the loo.

Apart from telling the time I kind of ignore my fitbit now :-(

There is absolutely no way any wearable tech knows how many calories you are burning - it is literally making it up. I believe there's only one way to tell and that's by going to a lab and measuring the air you expel while breathing.

You absolutely cannot rely on ordinary fitness watches to estimate an accurate calorie burn. They always hugely overestimate.
