Why does My Fitness Pal set such a high protein goal?

I've started to pay more attention to my nutrients and macros while using MFP with the aim of losing weight. My protein goal is 93g/day. Does this seem very high? And if so, why would that be?

I'm early 40s, 5' 7" and weigh 11 st 7. Aiming to lose the last challenging stone.

Because protein stops you feeling hungry and gives you energy?

Drybird2020 · 18/02/2022 22:53

@RandomMess that is my motivation for paying more attention to my protein intake 😊. But it is a lot higher than the average recommended amount and I find it difficult to eat that much protein - I will need to make major adjustments to my diet.

You can get yogurts with 25g protein

You can set the balance of how you want your calories distributed across carbs / protein / fat in the goal setting part of My Fitness Pal. The default is 50% carbs, 20% protein and 30% fat, which is about in the middle of the recommended ranges for each, it explains more here blog.myfitnesspal.com/ask-the-dietitian-whats-the-best-carb-protein-and-fat-breakdown-for-weight-loss/#:~:text=red%20blood%20cells.-,MYFITNESSPAL'S%20DEFAULT%20GOALS,protein%20and%2030%25%20from%20fat

Exact g of protein will depend on how many calories you are having. I've tweaked my goals to be 45% calories from carbs, 25% protein and 30% fat, and am on 1600 calories a day. My protein goal is 100g a day so yours doesn't sound far out.

I am meeting that protein goal, but that's largely because I'm trying to avoid processed carbs like bread at lunchtime and fill up on protein / veg / fats, so am definitely eating more eggs / meat than I did previously! I'm also eating quite a lot of low fat Greek yoghurt which has quite a bit of protein in it too.
I'm definitely finding avoiding the processed carbs at lunchtime helps with staying fuller for longer, and therefore cutting the need for afternoon snacks.

Eggs, chicken, salmon, protein yoghurts.

I struggle with protein intake as well but these help.

Thanks, all.
I don't eat meat but do occasionally have fish which I will need to increase. Thanks for the yogurt tip, I discovered skyr today which is lovely stuff and high in protein.
I'm going to do some careful meal planning!

Fage Greek yoghurt is lovely

Drybird2020 · 19/02/2022 23:51

@CrabbyCat thanks especially for the MFP explanation.

The rough guide is 1g of protein per kg of body weight - not sure what you weigh but something to use as a sense check

Some people say it should be a bit higher than that when you're dieting though.

@Gwenhwyfar as I said, rough guide
