Weigh and log everything on My Fitness Pal. It’s helped me lose 2.5 stone just by seeing where calories add up. You can eat as healthy as you like but if you eat too many calories you won’t lose.
Some ‘healthy’ sandwiches can be more calories than a roast dinner!

Work out your tdee on this link then reduce that amount by 20% to get your target calories. Don’t add your exercise onto MFP -it gives you calories back, if you eat them you will gain weight!

You need to log everything. Every cuppa, every sneaky biscuit, that half pack of the kids quavers you ate -log it all.

Don't eat too little as you won't be able to keep it up forever, work out your TDEE (think that is what it is called), eat an insane amount of protein and loads of both soluble and insoluble fibre, walk/run loads. Lift weights. I've starved myself and yoyo'd for years and have lost 30lb very slowly since Sept on 1800 cals per day, 1900 more recently as upped my work outs. I am still losing but v slowly... Am a healthy weight now and comfortably a size 12, I am 5 ft 7 and would like to lose another half a stone if possible.

Yes to my fitness pal. I have weighed everything when possible (easier in lockdown) and checked the entries and made my own if the current entry is incorrect. A total ball ache and not something I was up for doing but it has worked, now I am trying to guess weights then check them so I am not a food weighing nutter for the rest of my life

Another recommendation to weigh and log your food in mfp. I’ve lost nearly 4 stone in the past 8 months, although weight loss as slowed considerably in the past 2. Make sure you weigh and account for the everything (even milk in your tea) and don’t eat back your exercise calories. I do a mix of cardio (I run 4 times a week) and strength training and HIIT which seems to help.

Twerking9to5 · 06/03/2021 22:10

I started MFP 12 days ago and am 5lbs lighter. I’d previously dismissed MFP as too much hard work and I couldn’t be arsed. However, I can really see the benefit of truly understanding the calorie value of the foods you’re eating rather than attributing “points” or similar on weight watchers/slimming world. I’m hoping this is the thing that will click for me. I do appreciate you may not feel like inputting everything with two little ones Grin.

I also really like Fitness Blender. I have done the FB30 trial for about £5 but all their videos are free and searchable by time/style etc.

Sorry to jump on the thread but those with mfp - how do you work out home cooked meals? For example, if you make a salad, do you weigh each ingredient before putting it on the plate? Or if you’ve made a big chilli to last a couple of servings, do you add up all the ingredients then weigh up your portions?

Yes, I weigh everything and record it.

If it's something I make regularly and it's roughly the same, I record it in the 'my recipes' section and use that in future. If I eg divide something into four portions but only eat about 3/4 of it, I go back into MFP after eating and change the portion from '1' to '0.75' to reflect that.

I use lose it .....it has a recipe function so great for home cooked stuff. track everything. ,I am currently on 1500 calories. ,which is very doable. .ok it's slow but working.

Yes, another vote for logging calories. MyFitnessPal is the obvious choice of app as it’s free and easy to use. You have to log absolutely everything, don’t forget oil that you use to cook etc.

Also, especially at the moment if you are stuck at home most of the time try to ensure you’re general activity levels stay up as much as possible. I’ve taken to wearing a step counter (cheap Fitbit type watch) and making sure that I do 10k steps per day. I am making myself go out and walk every day for an hour to hit that target as I have a desk job that I’m doing from home.

As a PP says don’t set your calories too low otherwise you won’t stick to it. Don’t try to completely change your diet either. If you are a meat and veg girl, or a pasta eater etc, don’t think you will suddenly start enjoying salad every day. Tweak the things you already enjoy to remove calories, whether that’s by portion size, lower cal ingredients etc.

Make it a slow lifestyle choice and combine it with weight lifting of some sort to keep your muscles strong.

I lost 2 stone very quickly last year and in retrospect I should have gone slower and built muscle more. I effectively starved myself at some points and it "worked" but it's not good for you.

To keep it off in future, you will probably also have to adjust your diet permanently or you'll end up yo-yo-ing. Again this is where going slow will help you.

zzizzer · 07/03/2021 07:13

Also if you're breastfeeding that changes things too. You may not lose much (and possibly shouldn't) until you stop.

Geohigger · 14/03/2021 19:49

Thanks all I list everything I eat and it's all home cooked as I'm a chef I think it's I miss breakfast as so busy getting everyone else ready (mum thing lol) and forget myself

Agree about using an app for logging calories, but there are lots of them not just MFP. I didn't like MFP because you have to register your details to use it. I use mynetdiary because you can be anonymous on it, but there are lots.

Bubbletea50 · 20/03/2021 22:27

I'm also a my fitness pal evangelist. I found the hardest part is to work out the daily macros so that my breakdown across different calorie types is correct, I.e. work out where to add protein. If you find this hard, find one is the many meal plans out there.

I also, found that it's better for me to plan the entire day or set of days in advance. Then I'm not working out macros when hungry. That's the worst because the internal struggle becomes almost unbearable.

Slowly but surely, the weight falls off.
