why am I not losing weight?

Sorry I know there are lots of similar threads!

I am currently about 4-5 stone overweight. I've struggled with weight before but since having my 2 children it has just got out of control. i put on way too much with my first and never lost it and then have put in an additional stone with my second who has just turned 2.
i am currently eating 1400-1500 calories per day, and doing at least 10,000 steps per day. I've been doing this for the last month. in the last week I've also started jogging 5 times per week (approx 4km per run), and I am breastfeeding my one year old. I have not shifted a single pound.
according to mfp and my fitbit I should be losing easily 2-3lb per week. I know that ideally I would be doing more strength training and HIIT but with the gym being shut it hasnt been possible. if I was just slightly overweight, I could see that maybe I just wasnt doing quite enough but being quite considerably overweight, I cant understand why nothing is coming off, not even slowly. I am bigger than I've ever been before and finding it harder than it's ever been too. has anyone else been in this situation? what worked for you?

Are you really weighing and measuring every morsel that goes in your mouth? If you honestly are and not losing then maybe you should visit your GP. Exercise is great but it's the food that counts.

windthatbobbin · 26/07/2020 00:20

Pretty rough not to have shifted any yet - sounds like you're working hard. If you keep going it will start to come off, unless there's a medical reason why it wouldn't. What kind of calories are you eating?

Raimona · 26/07/2020 00:25

This is why I stopped breastfeeding. The hormones meant my body was hanging on to calories to feed my baby. When I reduced my calorie intake, my body refused to lose weight and instead just reduced its energy expenditure to conserve my milk supply. Dieting just made me feel tired - it was impossible for me to lose weight. I quit breastfeeding and lost 2lb a week on the exact same diet.

fluffydinosaur · 26/07/2020 00:43

yes I am honestly measuring everything out and putting it all into mfp. I would say my food is pretty healthy - i haven't cut out any food groups but trying to up the protein (lots of fish, chicken etc) and avoid too much sugar, sticking to wholegrain versions of bread and rice.
I have had a thyroid blood test which came back ok, but I am wondering if there is something medically wrong? does anyone know if there are any particular things that can be tested for?
i really dont want to give up breastfeeding just yet, although i do wonder if that might be the issue - I only had a couple of months between finishing breastfeeding my first and getting pregnant with my second so it has been a long time since I've been not pregnant or breastfeeding for any real length of time. It seems so counterintuitive as breastfeeding is supposed to burn the calories!

When you're exercising are you hitting your 'fat burning' heart rate...it's very important you do that, simply walking for 30 mins a day leisurely is helpful to your overall health but won't help you lose weight.

Rubybluesy · 26/07/2020 01:29

1400-1500 calories a bit high?

JaJaDingDong · 26/07/2020 09:05

Try measuring yourself as well as weighing. If you're running your building muscle, which is heavier than fat. You may be getting slimmer at the same time as you're getting heavier

NoImNotEntertained · 26/07/2020 09:12

I don't lose weight at 1400-1500 calories. I need to drop to 1200 or even 1000 before anything shifts. It's so annoying.

It does seem odd though. Can you get a polar watch or something that might help you find out more accurately what your baseline calorie usage for the day is? I know they're not always very accurate but clearly something is not right. How do your clothes feel?

fluffydinosaur · 26/07/2020 09:19

I have my fitbit on so I check on my heart rate zone- walking yes mainly in the fat burn zone, running split between cardio and peak zones.
in terms of calorie allowance being too high, I guess I will have to go lower to see what happens. but as I say I'm at least 4 stone overweight and breastfeeding, it doesnt feel right that I should need to eat less... if I was just trying to shift the last stone or so I would totally agree but when I've calculated my maintenance needs using my current weight, it suggests over 2500. I realise this might not be accurate for everyone but something is not adding up :(

When I was breastfeeding I went on a couple of diets and each time it was the same: I'd lose about half a stone really quickly and then nothing. It was weird. I've dieted all my life ( that's another story) and this was the only time like that.

planningaheadtoday · 26/07/2020 09:42

I'd stop calorie counting right now.

Focus on foods that won't have a big impact on your blood sugar. So lower carb, not low low carb, just switch your main carbs out for other things.

For example if you are eating something that would normally include potato, use new potatoes. The sugars/carbs are not as accessible to the body.

Avoid anything with flour (white or brown are both bad for blood sugar), and sugar obviously. Avoid rice and pasta and floury potatoes. All these hit the bloodstream fast and cause havoc with your blood sugars.

I swap in sweetener, there are so many types all tasting different. Also swap in new potato, sautéed, roasted, boiled and crushed.

I've discovered hovis do a very low carb loaf which means I can eat sandwiches.

I also use Fiberflour (I order online) In my cooking as it's very low carb. So I can have a small amount of traditional products if made with this, such as scones, cake, pancakes.

You can buy no added sugar jams now which are fine.

I'm not reducing the amount on my plate at all and I've lost 7lbs in the last fortnight. It works, I'm not hungry at all and because the mechanism you are controlling is the one that controls appetite, you naturally eat much less as you aren't hungry.

Personally, I'm normally obsessed on a diet and always feeling hungry and thinking about my next meal. I sky rocketed to nearly 15 stone and was pre-diabetic so I had to take action.

I've lost 31lbs easily now. 24 to go!
Having this method to stabilise blood sugars is a game changer.

fluffydinosaur · 26/07/2020 10:12

@noimnotentertained I dont know what a polar watch is? is it better than a fitbit? fitbit reckons I'm burning about 2800-3200 cals per day.
maybe I will try reducing another 100 cals and see if that helps

OP you only have to look on Google to discover that many women can’t lose weight while breastfeeding. It’s because of the hormones. Prolactin keeps you from burning your fat stores - nature’s way of conserving your body fat for feeding your baby. Yes you may be eating 500 calories a day less than you need, but your body isn’t forced to burn fat to regain those calories. Instead it can reduce your body temperature to save energy. Or it can reduce your metabolism and make you feel tired. Etc. It’s annoying but unfortunately can’t be helped.

NoImNotEntertained · 26/07/2020 10:40

I got a polar ignite for my birthday, pricey but has been helpful. You wear it on your wrist and it keeps track of all your activity all day and gives you an overall calorie burn. I link it to MFP and it automatically inputs my exercise and stuff.
That said they are not 100% accurate so again it is only a guide really but I find it helpful.

meme70 · 09/08/2020 12:53

Your not eating enough if your breast feeding and doing all that exercise NEVER EVER eat below 1209 a day

Your body is now storing aft as your basically starving it

I did that was on 1100-1200 a day running miles and walking and step fitness I didn’t lose weight a PT he upped it to 1665 and I lost 9lbs in 3 weeks

Do not drop your calories it’s actually not healthy

I’ve lost 7 stones
