Potentially silly question re calories per day...

2000 calories a day for women. Is that 2000 calories without taking into account any type of exercise? For instance, going for a walk, is that partly already accounted for within the 2000 calories?
Also, does anyone know how accurate that calorie counter is on a garmin watch? The reason for asking is that when I do a fitness class, I can easily do 3000 calories in a day, which I'm assuming includes my 2000 for the day?
Thanks in advance!

I eat 2000kcals a day, in an active job... lift heavy shit 4 days a week at the gym & its slooow losses. I’m heavy too which in itself burns more calories

Notthebloodygym · 29/01/2020 09:40

You shouldn't eat fewer than 1400.

If you put your height, exercise levels and weight into a TDEE tool, it will tell you now many calories you must likely use.

Mine days 1580 and I want to lose a pound a week. So eat 1400 get that loss from the 180 saved calories and a brisk a 30 minutes a day.

It definitely works, and I don't have heaps to lose. If you try that for a few week, then if you're not losing, up the exercise or lower the calories to 1300. Preferably the former.

Unless your fitness class is 2 hrs long and you're v overweight, it will not be burning 1000 kcal. Unfortunately a lot of fitness trackers such as Fitbit massively overestimate calories burned. It sucks!

doritosdip · 30/01/2020 20:32

I burn about 500 calories doing an hour of Zumba. How many hours do you exercise to burn 3000?

Pipandmum · 30/01/2020 20:34

2000 is just a guide. You may need less or more depending on many factors. I use MyFitnessPal app. It let's you plug in the details and will tell you how many calories to eat whether you want to lose, gain or maintain (and even then it's trail and error - you may need to adjust from experience). It allows you to input your exercise calories but they are generally way overestimated- and many just don't factor them in.
Basically you eat for your weight and workout for your health.

doritosdip · 30/01/2020 20:34

I've just read your post properly.

On exercise days I don't eat the calories that I burn. So on Zumba days I still eat the same as usual (about 1600 calories)

mynameiscalypso · 30/01/2020 20:41

My Garmin distinguishes between resting calories and active calories. The resting calories are what I burn by just being alive and it's the same every day, based on my height and weight. Active calories are extra that I earn through exercise so today I've only earned 70 calories from some yoga this morning and my total calorie expenditure for the day will be around 1,700. To burn 3,000 in a day would be pretty extreme - yesterday I did yoga, went to a salsa class, swam 50 lengths and did 12,000 steps and I only burnt 2,300 (including my base daily calorie burn of c. 1,600). So, that's a long way of saying that I think the calorie burn it's suggesting for you is probably overstated but it's a useful relative measure. If you're trying to lose weight, I'd stick to the same number of calories whether you exercise or not. It takes a lot of exercise to burn off calories.

have a look at a tdee calculator
2000 cals is just vague average. depending on size and exercise levels you might need quite a bit less
