Daily calorie intake

Can you not eat enough calories each day? Will it hamper weight loss?
I lead a very sedentary life and have been calorie counting 1000 cals a day. So far have lost a stone in around 6/8 weeks but not lost anything for the last 3 weeks or so. I'm wondering if I should be eating slightly more calories per day?

Starvation mode is a myth. If you consistently eat less cals than you use then you will lose weight.

You can't keep dropping down calories though, you'll eventually be eating nothing. Your going to have to start moving to get the weight off

I came on here to ask a similar question. I’ve been counting calories since February. I seemed to plateau for about 3 weeks so reduced my calorie intake from 1570 to 1400 and have started swimming for 30 mins 3-5 times a week. I lost half a stone the first week after the new regime (also had a tummy bug) but nothing for next two. I do struggle to go up to the calories as I eat proper meals but feel guilty about eating more to get up to my limit.
I’d be interested to know if there really is a starvation mode that stops weight loss. It doesn’t sound right to me.
Anyway sorry to hijack the thread but I was interested to see that others have the same experience OP.

1000 calories isn’t exactly healthy. I’ve lost a stone in 4 weeks by eating between 1500-1700 some days a little more. I don’t really exercise but I guess I’m quite active in other ways. School run, housework, chasing after the kids!

Depends on your height a lot. I'd never lose on 1600 as that's what I should be having for my height!

I think it becomes more about what you're eating once you stop losing with calorie counting. Going below 1000 isn't good for you unless you're doing 5:2. Fast days are supposed to be good although I only ever manage 2 weeks worth and need to have my mind in the right place. Reducing carbs could help. It's a bit of trial and error really.

I also think the starvation mode is a myth the less I eat the more I lose.

madeindevon2 · 06/02/2019 10:50

i used to think it was simple. science says calorie deficit. simples
however
having stuck rigidly to 1200 for 2 weeks lost nothing so then 1000 for 2 weeks (and lost no one single lb in that whole time im thinking there must be other factors at play
im only 5ft 2 and weight 149 lb but aiming to be more like 135-138
hormones maybe
i don't know
i'm exercising a lot (training for marathon) also poss a factor.

The problem with eating to little calories is that:

  1. At first you will loose, then your body will go into "survival" mode and think that as you are not giving your body enough it needs to stock up. But after that you will lose again.
  1. You may loose fat for a while, but after a while you will actually loose muscle. Which isn't good.

Th best way to loose weight is to eat enough, and well. Eat what your body really needs (fruit, vegetables, meat, etc...), and when you are hungry. You don't need to push yourself to the "limit" if you aren't hungry :)

MashedSpud · 08/02/2019 07:08

The Minnesota starvation experience proves starvation mode is a myth.
Each pound in weight is 3500 calories so if you go over your calorie limit by 500 calories each day with no exercise, in a week you’ll gain a pound.

MashedSpud · 08/02/2019 07:08

Experiment not experience.

Mide7 · 08/02/2019 07:13

What generally happens when people think they are in “starvation” mode is their activity levels drops without them realising.

ChrisjenAvasarala · 08/02/2019 07:15

As you lose weight, your body burns less calories at simply "living" mode.

For example, at 12 stone you might burn 2400 calories just living your normal day to day life. But at 11 stone, you might only burn 2000 calories doing the exact same things (calorie numbers made up).

So, as you lose weight it does become harder and you won't shift the rest if you weight as quickly as with the same calories you did on day one. Keep going; it will come off just more slowly.
