When is better to exercise?

Is it better to exercise in the morning or evening?
I calorie count (around 1400 a day) and swim 4 times a week for an hour. I normally swim in the evening around 7-8pm as I am busy during the day but now it's summer I could swim in the morning.
I was thinking surely all the calories you consume during the day will already be burnt and stored as fat by the time it's the evening and you start to try and burn them off through cardio.
I have lost a stone so far and am struggling to lose more. My calories in vs calories out seem fine. I eat around 1400-1500 a day and burn 2250-2500.

Bump :(

I don't think it makes a difference.

I am reasonably sure it comes down to calories in vs calories out over a period of time.

Wolfiefan · 23/07/2017 14:31

I wouldn't have thought it made a difference either? What's your BMI like? Are you actually overweight? Surely you can't be with a calorie deficit like that.

FatCatFaces · 23/07/2017 14:42

It doesn't matter when you exercise.

I exercise when it's most convenient, which is usually at 8pm. I have lost a lot of weight.

Weight loss unfortunately takes times and dedication. Even when you're doing everything properly you can have many weeks with no losses, especially as you get closer to target.

mummytobemaybe · 23/07/2017 14:51

I am 5ft7 and 92kg I was 99kg when I started losing weight 3 months ago

Are you sure you are burning that many calories?!

espoleta · 23/07/2017 15:01

I've read that you burn more calories in the morning (like the crack of dawn and maybe on an empty stomach) but it could be rubbish.

mummytobemaybe · 23/07/2017 15:10

Koala - yes I am sure, me and my doctor calculated my BMR and my daily calorie burn plus exercise.

You have lost 7kg in 3 months on. 1400 calorie diet?

If you are consuming ~1500 and burning ~2500. That is a deficit of ~7000 calories a week. So ~2lbs.
In 12 weeks you would/should have lost around 24lbs/10kgs.

However, I just checked, your exercise would account for around 3500 a week.
Where did you arrive at the figure of 2000+ calories burned a day?

mummytobemaybe · 23/07/2017 15:20

I do very high intensity interval training and strength training, I suspect I have built muscle which has contributed to my weight which could be showing why I have not lost that much weight on the scale. I have dropped from a size 16 to almost a size 12. It's all very complicated :(

Wolfiefan · 23/07/2017 15:21

You've gone down nearly two dress sizes in three months?! You've lost over a stone? Why aren't you happy!

mummytobemaybe · 23/07/2017 15:22

I am still classed as obese through my BMI and have a lot of squishy fat on my stomach and thighs that I would like to lose. I am happy yes, but far from where I want to be

Wolfiefan · 23/07/2017 15:24

But it's only been three months? That's very very early days.

KoalaDownUnder · 23/07/2017 15:27

An hour of HIIT burns around 800 calories (max), and an hour of fast swimming about 700 (max).

Even if you did both of those in one day, that'd be 1500 burned, max. Where would you burn another 1000?

I'm certainly not calling you a liar or anything, it just doesn't seem right.

Potterhead113 · 23/07/2017 15:29

I burn around 1700 daily without exercise through my BMR which me and my doctor calculated. The exercise calories burned go on top of that so I burn in total a day 2250-2500

Potterhead113 · 23/07/2017 15:30

My BMR is very high because I am very overweight however I recognise that my BMR will decrease as I lose more weight which means I will need to adjust my exercise and eating poan

MyfatheristheKing · 23/07/2017 15:30

Koala, I think she is including the calories everyone burns, just living and breathing, the calories your body burns just to survive everyday.

Potterhead113 · 23/07/2017 15:31

This is still me I just changed my account name btw

KoalaDownUnder · 23/07/2017 15:32

Oh right, I'm with you!

00100001 · 23/07/2017 17:05

So you think the exercise counts for upto 800 calories a day?

YouR BMR is 1700. (11,900 a week)
You are burning around 3500 with exercise a week.
And consuming 1400 a day (9,800 a week)

So, in theory you are using 11900+3500 (15400) each week total energy used up.

That should be a deficit of 5600 a week. So around 1.5lbs which is reflected in the 7kgs /15lbs.

You seem to be over estimating how many calories the swimming and exercise is accounting for.

You're doing well. A healthy weight loss is 1-2lb a week over the course of your journey.

You're spot on :)

Potterhead113 · 23/07/2017 17:43

How much weight a week would a weekly deficit of 3000 calories lose?

MyfatheristheKing · 23/07/2017 17:59

Less than a pound

00100001 · 23/07/2017 18:22

Don't get too focused on numbers.

You should be looking to change your lifestyle for the long term.

And losing 1-2lb is a sensible amount.

However. I would double check your calorie intake. Do you weigh and measure everything? For example you may have started out by weighing cereal (let's say 40g) and now you think you know what 40g looks like. So you pour in the amount you think us 40g. Then go and weigh it. You might be surprised!

Potterhead113 · 23/07/2017 19:52

Yes I weigh everything to the exact point

00100001 · 24/07/2017 07:54

Well, the only way you will be able to lose more weight is to either cut more calories. Or increase exercise. As you seem to be over estimating the calories burned with this.

But I don't see that you need to do either tbh
