MFP or Nutracheck? Which one and why?

MarvinKMooney · 22/01/2016 15:27

I've been using MFP for a few months now. Naturally, there's an American bias, but I've been pretty happy with it and it's been working for me.

I've just started a week's trial with Nutracheck - much more of a UK focus, nice layout, seems easy to use.

Just interested ... if you've used both, which one do you prefer and why? Is it worth paying a fee to use Nutracheck in the long run? Is there anything on MFP that isn't on Nutracheck ... and vice versa?

Any thoughts appreciated!

I'd be interested to know the differences? How much is Nutracheck? I'm using MFP and would find it hard to justify paying for something I could get for free.

Mackers123 · 24/01/2016 21:09

MFP just down to the fact that it's free. Nutracheck is at the moment just under £30 for 6 months

Happymummie2 · 25/01/2016 15:03

Nutracheck has an App only membership for £3.99 which is ideal for me - it has photos of all the foods I eat which makes it very easy to identify them, and it's totally UK focussed. It covers all the supermarkets (Aldi, Waitrose and everything in between) and the coffee shop chains as well - brilliant!

MarvinKMooney · 25/01/2016 18:38

Ooh replies! Thank you Smile

I've just discovered the app-only option - they keep that one well hidden! Liking Nutra check so far - the UK focus makes it all so much easier.

Weirdly, Nutracheck gives me more calories than mfp. Anyone else found that?

My free trial ends in a day or two and I think I may indeed make the switch ...

Been using Nutracheck since the new year. They encourage you exercise so you are expected to earn at least 200 calories a day. Happy to pay just now as trying to loose a final stone and couldn't get my head round the new Weight Watchers plan(lost 3.5 so far), might have a rethink when I'm comfortable maintaining though.

CharleyDavidson · 22/07/2016 20:21

Old thread, but adding my opinion anyway.

I much prefer nutracheck despite having to pay. I have just rejoined with an offer of 25% off by quoting concept1 at the promo box option. So £18ish for 3 months. Obviously a lot of people would prefer free, but I think it's alot cheaper than ww or sw. And like some others, I prefer the picture options and the uk bais compared to the us bias of MFP.

peachcake · 23/07/2016 22:21

Nutracheck all the way, UK friendly and so easy to use! They have a helpline too Smile

CharleyDavidson · 23/07/2016 23:08

Didn't know about the helpline!

I like how it expects you to be a certain level of active before awarding you extra cals to use or to save.

And how you can choose a day or two a week for extra cals and it automatically lowers the cals on the rest of the days in the week to compensate.

GuttedDotCom · 23/10/2016 20:24

I know this is an old thread, but can you do a "live weigh in" with other people on the app only Nutracheck version? I do like that aspect of it on the website.

Penelope63 · 08/03/2021 10:07

How do I find the app only of nutra check please, I’m currently on a weeks trial of the full one?

Myrt23 · 29/03/2021 09:26

I just downloaded the app from my play store on my phone.

LizzyELane · 10/04/2021 13:01

Nutracheck is just brilliant, well worth paying for, just for the ease and speed of finding just about every food or drink you can think of and very quick to select the portion size. It knocks spots of the WW food database, which is limited and clumsy to use. Nutracheck is also customisable according to whether you want to focus on something other than their basic balanced plan, like monititoring carbs, fat or sugar. It counts alcohol units. I think it also gives nutrition breakdowns. I don't work for them!! It's annoying paying £7 a month, and it does lack WWs huge recipe section, but it is a very good product!

LadyEggs · 11/04/2021 19:28

I've just started to use nutracheck too and I much prefer it to MFP. The diary entries are much, much easier to use and have so many UK supermarket foods, plus take aways, restaurants and drinks. It takes less time to input than MFT, which is a winner for me. It is currently half price for a years subscription, so £23, which is about £2 a month! You can do a week free to see if you like it. Today I entered 'roast dinner' and it suggested about 800 cals, so I just went with it but you have the option to weigh and measure if you prefer.

easterdaffsx · 18/04/2021 08:44

I signed up to this last Sunday after reading this thread and after my free week I'm moving over to Nutrachevk too . Love it thanks.

DrMadelineMaxwell · 23/04/2021 18:58

I prefer it to mfp. I just find it v friendly to use. I liked my ww meetings a few years ago and got to goal on vintage points but never got the grip of pro points and later plans. And their reimagined website was clunky and awful to use.

HappyPie82 · 04/05/2021 19:29

I’ve used MFP for ten years. Currently on a 127 of entering weight and calories which is the longest I’ve ever managed. I enter all my food as recipes as I pretty much cook 90% of what we eat from scratch so I weigh and enter as I cook and then weigh my portions. Works really well for me. Lost 7lbs over the last couple of weeks of properly committing to 1400cals and the gym reopeningN!

Iamdobby63 · 05/05/2021 13:36

I’m really liking Nutracheck, it’s so easy to use and help by the fact it’s UK based.

1983Roxy · 07/05/2021 20:36

Nutracheck is much better, but MFP is free, so if you are lucky enough to afford it, go for Nutracheck.

sandwiches77 · 08/05/2021 07:59

Using Nutracheck on the free trial, really don't want to pay for it (or similar apps) as MFP is free. Why is it worth the cost?

SallyOMalley · 18/05/2021 20:08

Well, that's a surprise. I'm the original OP with a username from a different life. I thought I recognised the question!

Here I am back calorie counting to lose my lockdown lumber (about a stone would be lovely thank you very much).

I stayed with MFP at the time because I could link it with my Garmin, but now I see Nutracheck has the same capability. There are a couple of other changes too and I really like it. Very easy to use! Love the uk-focused food lists too.

So, Nutracheck it is! Smile

Clementine183 · 17/05/2022 07:35

I've just started on Nutracheck, done my seven free days and have now paid for the year - they're doing a deal for £23.99 a year on the app at the moment. I figured that really isn't that much and it's worth it as (IMO) it's so much more user-friendly. I think I did download MFP a while ago and never got beyond a day, I found something about it really depressing and it just felt unachievable.

Doing OK on Nutracheck so far - I don't have a lot to lose, just want to tone up and slim down a bit on the lower half to be honest and maybe drop 2-3kg overall, but I have very little willpower and eat way too much sweet stuff because I've always been able to without putting on a lot of weight. It's meant that the little bit of extra has crept on stealthily and now it's hard to shift. For some reason Nutracheck is really focusing my mind and helping me eat more healthily. As a little tip which might help some people... I have actually set mine to "maintain" (which for me is 1951 calories a day) and then I just aim to come in about 400 under. I don't know why but I find that a lot easier than having it set to 1500 and trying not to go over! Mind you I'm only doing my first weigh-in tomorrow 😂so it may not be working!

Clementine183 · 17/05/2022 07:36

Sorry just seen the last post was from May 2021, not 2022! Still, it's still relevant 😁

Squiffy01 · 06/06/2022 09:33

@Clementine183 thanks for a recent review. I've just signed up to MFP again and remembered I don't like it!
With Nutracheck if you search for say apple can you put in how many grams you have had easily? This is what really annoys me about MFP its all random measurements and I can't say I've had this much job done.

Clementine183 · 06/06/2022 20:54

@Squiffy01 yeah it's pretty easy, most foods have a default setting for the amount but you can easily adjust it to a certain number of grams.
Still going on Nutracheck and have lost just over 2kg so far, another one and I think I'll be sorted and go back to maintaining for a bit! I've never got on with this sort of thing before but I do like it.

WouldBeGood · 06/06/2022 20:59

I use MFP because it’s free
