Just weighed out 2oz of uncooked pasta as one portion. No wonder I'm fat! My 6 year old eats more than that. Hmm

It does look more when it's cooked but I agree its shocking how small a portion is

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 03/01/2014 16:47

Just weight till you weigh out 30g of cereal...

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 03/01/2014 16:47

Just wait until you weigh out 30g of cereal...

NachoAddict · 03/01/2014 16:50

I am always shocked at portion sizes, people don't really eat that amount do they?

cupcake78 · 03/01/2014 17:28

I've done cereal but pasta! I'm going to be hungry tonight aren't I?

The packet says 50g for a starter, 75-100g for a main course. 50g is 2oz, near enough.

ChancetoDance · 03/01/2014 17:39

I read an article at the weekend about how huge our portions have become over the last 10/20 years. Even things like standard sized bread rolls/bagels have increased by around 20%

It brings it home to me when I bake fairy cakes. Made in the same tins my mum used to use and seen as an extravagant treat when I was a child. My DC think they're tiny and need to be eaten (at least) two at a time Blush

SavoyCabbage · 03/01/2014 17:43

I went to a museum yesterday and one of the things that dc and I noticed was how small the clothes were. In 1913, the average collar size was 14 inches

ilovepowerhoop · 03/01/2014 17:56

my pasta says 75g per portion and we try not to have much more than that (and then we cover it in sauce!)

cupcake78 · 03/01/2014 17:58

I weighed it cooked and it was exactly 100g cooked. Game a 'full' portion to ds who looked at me with a 'and the rest' look.

Agree that 50g is starter, and you should be 75g raw weight.
Doesn't mean were not used to eating too much.

BackforGood · 03/01/2014 18:08

That's what we always have here - 2oz per person. It looks bigger when you cook it.
Why, how much have you been eating ?

cupcake78 · 03/01/2014 18:19

I'm a bit embarrassed to tell you how much I've been eating. On average double it but we don't have pasta with creamy cheesy sauces so that's a small compensation I suppose.

I used to have 100- 125 g as a portion when I was anorexic..... It all depends what you put with it as if you have 100g with a vegetable sauce it's much lower calorie than50g with carbonara!

HoratiaDrelincourt · 03/01/2014 19:26

A hundred years ago most people didn't have enough to eat, so although we probably do eat too much, a comparison with 1913 wouldn't prove that.

Itsrainingcatsanddogs · 09/01/2014 09:53

I've just had sickness bug, only just started eating again. My
Stomach must have shrunk couldn't eat my normal
Size portion, so now gonna try and stick to smaller ones.

higgle · 09/01/2014 14:57

2 oz for me, 3 oz for large male family members, those are the standard portions in my house, diet or no diet.

STIDW · 09/01/2014 22:51

40-50g dried weight or 100g cooked for me.

Cat98 · 15/01/2014 09:20

Goodness me, I'd have about 150g dried weight as a portion!

AngryFeet · 04/02/2014 11:25

I used to have a lot more pasta than I should but now I stick to 75g and add lots of veg to bulk it up. If I pesto for example I stick loads of fried mushrooms and courgettes in plus brocolli and peas. Tastes better too I think :)
