Comments on moving to US?

I wasn’t too worried about Labour at first and thought they can’t be much worse than the Tories, but within a very short space of time we’ve been pretty much been decimated by taxes and odd policy decisions in my industry and now we’ve just been told my DCs school is closing due to education taxes. All this on top of Brexit, cost of living, crime and mass immigration makes us think it’s time to leave the U.K. whilst we’re still young enough to start over. An opportunity has come up in the US (New York), has anybody made this move in their early 30s and has any advice?

have you seen what’s going on in the US? Also you have posted this in the bullying topic.

This is in ‘bullying’. Perhaps get it moved?

FWIW, I wouldn’t want my children to go to school in the US because of their gun laws and school shootings.

Oops, first time poster. How do you move it?

Depends how right wing you want to country. If you are happy with that, USA would be great. If not, maybe not. Though I am not particularly right wing myself, I love the USA as a country. But then I am happy enough in the UK at the moment

You think you’re being ‘bullied’ by the UK? And you think the US is going to treat you nicely?

Can I ask how you are finding things in the UK? Do you have young children and are you a net tax payer?

Well that’s the worry I think, but it does seem that culturally the US encourages aspiration.

Step one is visa category, work sponsorship, transfer, spouse, study, those are the common lanes. I used Lorenzo Law Group for a consult and they had me map timeline, documents, and what happens if a job falls through, which is the part people skip.

Then pick a borough or nearby area based on commute and budget, compare take home pay after federal, state, city taxes, add health insurance, rent, and childcare if relevant. If all this feels like to much, maybe give them a call, they could sort it out

So you want to move to the US because our political landscape is a bit dodgy😂😂

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 23/12/2025 15:06

I lived in the US for years. You couldn’t drag me there for a holiday now. It’s very scary times over there. I personally would wait until the orange faced turd is gone.

Every young professional I know, who has moved there recently, is now applying for a green card. High income, low tax, ambition is encouraged and there are masses of opportunities. Yes they have problems with guns, but our crime rate is rising rapidly. Our NHS was once the envy of the world, but if you get medical insurance with your job, their health system is great. Schools are well financed and the sport on offer is amazing. Give it a go, even if it’s just for the experience and to broaden your horizon.

Where do you live to have a rapidly increasing crime rate? My police force has decreasing crime rates for the past two years.

Serious crime is up in the UK. Op lives in London, so it will be prevalent there. I live in the country, but schools are now having to think seriously about knives and drugs as a daily part of some students lives. County lines is a very genuine and serious threat.
