Wrong friendships?

Hi. My son who is in P2 now used to be bullied by a boy back in P1 being called “buttface” and all sorts of nasty things. We did talk to the school and the issue seemed to ve resolved. The boy used to bully not only my child, but a lot of children were saying the same thing. Now that they are in P2 suddenly my son says that boy is his best friend. Every day I ask who he played with and he will say the name of that kid and none of his previous good friends. This also has started to affect his behaviour-I can definitely see he is changing, using the words we would never use at home and yesterday he started swearing. I keep talking and explaining, I even suggested he spends more time with his other friends and not just that boy. But it is useless. What do I do? Do I just tell him not to play with the kid anymore? That should probably result in him still playing with him but coming and lying to me that he didn’t. I hate being in this kind of a situation but I can’t help but feel terrible when I see my calm, kind and well behaved son turn into someone who I wouldn’t want him to be.

Are they in the same class? If so, I would ask the teacher to monitor your son's behaviour around this child. Be aware that of course your child will hear all sorts from many different children so the swearing is maybe coming from more than one person. If they aren't in the same class then it's a friendship at playtime and lunchtime. Again ask the school to help your child develop other friends. I would suggest you ignore the language as much as possible, just saying you don't use these words in your house. My dd tells dgs that some words are adult words and shouldn't be used. Just keep reminding your DC of behaviour rules at home. We say, "kind feet and hands" a lot! If you bad mouth the other child, it might have an adverse effect and make your DC cling harder to them. Friendships ebb and flow so hopefully the fascination will die out
