Police or not

Phone call from the school nurse this morning to say that there had been an incident with my 15 year old son. Turns out that another 15 year old boy had run after him, for no reason, with a very big stick and whacked him purposely. We have been to a&e (for hours) as he's in so much pain. Luckily it's only soft tissue damage, but he remains in a lot of pain and has a splint to wear for a few weeks. I have no confidence the school will deal with this adequately. They have already told me that can't say what sanctions will be in place only that there will be some. It's basically assault. The hospital asked me if police were involved. My question is, should I ring the police or it this too extreme as no bones were fractured/ broken.

You could ring the non emergency line for advice. Is your DS having problems with this boy, or is it really a one off/boys messing about situation?

I would involve the police. I have no faith in schools dealing with this type of thing, as I've seen first hand how useless they are.

We were told the route they would take was "Restorative Justice", which based on what they did was a quick chat about it. Bugger that, an assault took place and should be dealt with in the appropriate way.

Problems in school generally, but one off with this boy

Oh yes restorative justice, where they subject the innocent child to chatting with the bully. Had experience of that. My child won't be doing that again

Go to the Police, that was assault and ABH.

Go to the police...and let the school know you have done so.

Of course you go to the police and you don’t stop until he’s sentenced for assault.
