Daughter attacked at school

Hi everyone, o am after some other points of view please.
Yesterday my 14yo daughter was using a printer in class at her school when a boy walked behind her and said " Does this hurt?" He then proceeded to slash her leg with a blade he had made by smashing open and flattening the blade of a pencil sharpener!! 😱. Luckily he only managed to cause a nasty scratch and was immediately removed from class. He was suspended for one day and is due back tomorrow but has to be in isolation while he the school "work" with him. I am beyond furious that nothing tougher has been done and think that as it was an assault with a basically a blade, that the police should be involved?? I'm terrified that this child will do something worse to another child of something more isn't done. Please advice x

Yeah 100% please phone the police. I'm amazed the school haven't already!

VettiyaIruken · 08/07/2021 20:51

Yes they should.
You should phone them yourself.
You don't need to rely on the school to do it.

TotorosCatBus · 08/07/2021 20:52

I would be contacting the police. 1 day is not a punishment

5hyl33n · 08/07/2021 20:52

Hi @Jollymum81,

I am appalled by the school's behaviour. You should definitely involve the police. I can't believe the school took it that lightly.

I hope your daughter is OK.

0None0 · 08/07/2021 20:54

Yes of course the police should be involved. Why haven’t you reported this to them? The school can’t. The teachers are not victims or witnesses. You have to.

Schools are not law enforcement agencies. If you get assaulted in Sainsbury’s, you do t report it to the manager abs expect them to deal with it, do you?

I never understand why parents don’t report crimes committed against their children because it happens on school premises.

I’m a teacher. This drives me mad

Hollyhocksarenotmessy · 08/07/2021 20:54

Dear God! He tried to slash another pupil with a sharp object. Call the police yourself.

MalbecIsMyOne · 08/07/2021 20:55

Yep I’d be reporting it to the police.

The school can’t tell you what “working with him” means but he made & used a bladed weapon whilst in their care. That’s a massive safeguarding issue.

MichelleScarn · 08/07/2021 20:55

Absolutely police

VariantL1130 · 08/07/2021 20:56

You need to call the police.

Lou573 · 08/07/2021 20:57

Police, that’s a serious assault.

greendiva · 08/07/2021 20:58

Contact the school and tell them you're reporting to police. Amazed the school has neglected their duty to do this. Also amazed he's suspend for just one day for making a weapon and assaulting your child.

nocoolnamesleft · 08/07/2021 20:59

Call the police yourself, as the school hasn't.

0None0 · 08/07/2021 21:10

It isn’t up to the school to call the police. It’s up to you. Why haven’t you done it?

Jollymum81 · 08/07/2021 21:11

Thank you everyone, I had stupidly assumed that the school would contact the police as that is what the deputy head said the procedure was! After calling this morning he said the best he would do is contact the local pcso! I have told the School that I will be contacting the police and am literally just filing an online complaint as 101 is so slow! I was assured by the school that there was a strict zero policy for bullying and especially knife crime! Apparently not! I will keep you posted on progress but trust me I am not giving in! Many thanks all and apologies to the teacher i upset. Obviously I have never been in this situation before and filled what the school told me!

Notify police and press charges for assault.

The school should have done that!

GettingItOutThere · 08/07/2021 21:19

police. He should be excluded permanently, how crap are the school at dealing with that! He could have slashed artery

make a list of all witnesses and name the staff who dealt with your daughter and you. Hand this to police .
nimbuscloud · 08/07/2021 21:20

Wow.

User135792468 · 08/07/2021 21:22

Absolutely disgusting. Definitely report to police and pursue. How is this child allowed back on the school site?

Zilla1 · 08/07/2021 21:41
  1. Police.
  2. Request in writing a statement about how your daughter will be kept safer.
  3. Complain to chair of governors about initial decisions allowing a return and ask for a statement interpreting their policies to state how this should have been handled. If they endorse the SLT's decision then complain further.

The school might not have been able to prevent the incident unless they've mishandled prior incidents or statements but they've not handled this, based on a return after one day for an attack with a bladed instrument.

Sorry to hear that and good luck.

No you don’t. You might inform the manager, but you don’t expect them to be arresting, collecting evidence, arranging criminal charges…..

Because it’s not their job, they don’t have the time, authority, resources, skill set etc etc etc.

You call the police. Who’s job it is to deal with crime

StrawberrySundayz · 08/07/2021 22:07

The manager would call the police. You really are confusing what you would do (or rather wouldn’t do) with how the real world works.

Dragonfly101 · 08/07/2021 22:23

I hope your daughter is okay. Such a shocking thing to happen.
Most definitely needs police involvement.
When my son was assaulted at school they called the police. I also took him for a medical check so there was a record.
Have her write a statement of what happened as soon as possible (the school should have done this, you may need to check and you need your own copy).
Hope this gets resolved to your satisfaction.

Nonsense. I am trying to point out that an employee who is not the victim and not a witness is not the person to call.

I’ve only known a supermarket manager call the police once, in exceptional circumstances

The victim calls the police. Or their parent.
