Racism in YR2

Hi,

I'm hoping for some suggestions about what to do in this situation, which will hopefully stop me going off in the deep end, which is pretty much what I feel like doing right now.

Just had a conversation with a parent who said that one of their children's best friends is transferring schools at the end of the year because of bullying which was not limited to but certainly contained racist elements.

The child who is leaving is in my DS's class, in year 2. They are amicable but he's not in her group of close friends. The child whose parent I spoke with is a good friend of my DS, and I know the parent well so I believe what he told me.

So my question is, what can I do? What does it make sense to do?

I'm frankly horrified at the moment having only heard this a few minutes ago. I will try and quietly speak with the child's parents in the playground, just to say how sorry I am that they've had to come to this decision , of course.

Would it make sense to speak to the teacher (they're all in the same class)? It isn't my child that's been bullied but I don't want him in an environment where this has happened and I'd like some reassurances that it was dealt with appropriately.

What else? Letter to the governors? As far as I understand the child who has been bullied is definitely going and so there's no chance of making it any worse than it is which is what would hold me back, if anything could.

Has this ever happened near you and what did you do?

WannaBe

Horrible story. Thank-you.

Thankfully I'm so far removed from playground gossip most of the time almost nothing reaches me. I'm mostly the parent with the confused and shocked look on my face when everyone else knows something that's been happening right under my nose. Confused

Not Islamic, no. As far as I understand it, and you kind folk have done a good job of convincing me I know bugger all, it wasn't a single incident and has no coincidence with the recent attacks.

So this other parent did tell you a bit of the goss by the sounds of it.

You're doing the right thing by beaking out, chinese whispers and gossip are never a good mix for infant school children let alone adults.

Im not even sure Id mention anything to my DC about it specifically. If your DC know they can come to you or the teachers if they have any concerns that's covered it.

Are you concerned your DC may be at future risk of racism?

GahBuggerit

I don't know what I can say to convince you that I'm less of a "OMG I can't believe it tell me everything!" person and totally a "I am hugging you with my mind from 500 feet away and you will never know" person.

Still weird, I know, but not in an invasive way. Grin

GahBuggerit
Sorry, I'm not concerned about my son being a victim, no.

You don't need to convince me don't be daft BUT your OP and posts about telling your DC about it, wanting reassurance something was done, "going off at the deep end", "first impulse is to dive in" (which is a little in contradiction to your repressing comment) and approaching the parents who may well be a little "who is this person?" did make it sound like the opposite of your latest posts.

I guess talking it through on MN has made you change your stance though which is good!!

Thanks everyone who responded. I've decided I may be guilty as charged for wanting to stick my oar in and will be doing nothing except saying to DS, "Did you know Whatsit was leaving?" and seeing what he says. I've asked Mumsnet to delete the thread, I've read Mumsnet for years but hardly ever post, so I don't know if they will be able to do that but want to avoid being a gossip as much as I can. Thanks again, you've been great.

GahBuggerit I can see the contradiction you mention ... but in truth I think I'm sufficiently repressed so that I hardly ever obey my first impulse! (Perhaps I would have been OK even without posting but I would have kicked the furniture a lot, so you've all saved me from a sore foot at least!)
