my 5 yr old son denigrated by teacher after receiving head injury

my 5 year old son received a bad head injury in school. When I got a call to collect him, the teacher who claimed to be witness to me in the school reception area that my son is "...not exactly the sharpest tool in the box...". this was while I was cleaning the blood stains from my crying child and tending to the cold compress to allow the bleeding to stop. To this day, i have not received a written report of the accident from the school, nor have i resolved the pain and anger inside me regaerding the comment made in the presence of a member of the office staff. What, if anything, can be done?

you have to remember that when i saw my son in school, he was alone in a chair in the reception area, with blood covering his nose, teeth, mouth, cheeks, clothes. his face was swollen, and it was clear that he had been crying for a long time. In fact the a&e doctor was definite that the injury had taken place a good hour before the school rang me to collect him. And it didn't happen at lunch-time (as the school later claimed) because i left with my son at 12:20pm well before lunchtime

If you're so unhappy with the school then move him. If he's happy now then don't. Accidents happen and no school is perfect.

givemepakora · 20/03/2012 14:26

it is not financial gain...it is the pain of seeing what happened my son, and the anger and frustration that people are being paid huge salaries for their incompetence and unprofessionalism.

It was a year ago.

LadySybilDeChocolate · 20/03/2012 14:28

You need to go and see your GP and ask about counselling. It sounds very distressing for you. You also need to move him to a new school as you appear to have no faith or confidence in the current one to keep him safe.

clam · 20/03/2012 14:29

So, you said to the A&E doctor that the school phoned you at, say, 11.30am and he could accurately predict (presumably some hours afterwards, if the A&E dept is like any I've ever been in) when the injury had occurred prior to that? Hmm

I think you might be muddling A&E with CSI!

I've just spent 10mins reading this thread and feel like I've fallen down the rabbit hole.

So, he had a nasty accident and school have not been forthcoming about exactly what happened. The cut could have been worse/nasty or even fatal had it been 3cm higher. Dr spoke to school and somehow then joined in the silence of conspiracy. EWO is also in on it.

Ok, can I ask,
1)Have you been trying to discuss this with the HT since last March?
2)Have you been waiting for a solicitor to call you back since last March?
3)Are you sure it wasn't you who sustained the head injusry?

clam · 20/03/2012 14:32

"it is the pain of seeing what happened my son"
I think you need to put this into perspective. We've all sat in A & E with our kids when they're hurt and crying - don't see it matters if it's through falling off their bike or what may/may not have happened here. Claiming compensation won't change that.
Move on.
And I second what sybil said - I think you might benefit from a chat with your GP.

If even ambulance chasing lawyers aren't interested, then there really, really hasn't been a problem. You sound very angry though and as though anyone in authority feels like a threat. Are there other issues in your life that are contributing to this?

Despite everything, the OP should absolutely have received a copy of the incident in writing if she requested. Furthermore, all head injuries warrant a note sent home with the child detailing what happened at what time and what action was taken. This has been standard in every primary school I have ever worked in and I'm not even sure it isn't a legal requirement though I may be wrong on that.

yy lovingthecoast. I can't work it out really and have a feeling that the OP is accusing the teacher of causing the head injury...and there is the problem.

If I thought that a teacher had hurt my child then Fuck YEAH I'd be going mad and chasing it down - a year ago. I would also have pulled my child out of that school faster than you can say That Was Quick.

TO be still so horriblly upset about all this after such a long time is not helping anyone

Floggingmolly · 20/03/2012 14:44

You say the hospital claimed the injury was consistent with a violent push from a much larger child/adult. Surely your DS could have told you what happened? Confused. And why have you been brooding about this for a year instead of dealing with it? You sound quite disturbed Hmm

PatriciaHolm · 20/03/2012 14:45

"nor have i resolved the pain and anger inside me regaerding the comment made in the presence of a member of the office staff"

I think this is more your problem than anything else. You are angry and have allowed that to fester for, it seems, a year?!!

If you have genuine concerns about the school's care for its pupils, remove your son. I think you should also see your GP about what appears to be some sort of persecution complex; you are seeing conspiracies everywhere, where there are none.

LeBOF · 20/03/2012 14:46

This sounds like the sort of school that would just leave dead wasps on the windowsill. Awful.

Hebiegebies · 20/03/2012 15:09

Is it possible dr said " it would have had to be 3 cm further up to be serious / fatal" ?

He could have been sarcastic

IME if everyone is drawing a blank, even the lawyers, you just need to accept it wasn't as bad as you think, your memory of a traumatic event is hazy due to it being a year ago ad you being in shock at he time.

Agree it's time to seek help for yourself so that you and your son can move on

seeker · 20/03/2012 15:36

Oh, god, it's a "compo" thread. Ick.

Bitofastate · 20/03/2012 15:49

i had a wasp once in my living room. was dead but OH wouldnt move it. Turned out he'd been boffing Shirley down the road. My OH, not the wasp obviously, although who knows?

LIZS · 20/03/2012 15:52

Dare I suggest that the reason you haven't had a call back is becasue they don't think the case is worth taking up. Yes your son had a nasty experience in circumstances you haven't had a satisfactory response about but as it was a while back and he is still attending the school it will be hard to be taken seriously now. Presumably he has made a full recovery ? By all means double check that the injury was appropriately recorded. The doctor's opinion until he spoke to the school was pure conjecture based on your second hand account of the circumstances, his priority to patch up your son and had he really believed he had been assaulted he would have reported it formally.
