Am I producing enough milk?

My son who is 6 days old had his tounge tie cut today after being told he was 90 percent tied. Up until this point we have been exclusively breastfeeding - he lost 8.2% of his birth weight but by day 5 put on 50G which put him to 7% something weight loss in total.

He had been latching sort of every 20 minutes, apart from at night time where he is sleeping 3-4 hrs at a time.
Today I noticed an increase in wet nappies and he has had 4 since this morning.

His latch has been checked and although tounge tied it looked good. He falls asleep whilst feeding frequently and it’s difficult to get him interested. I ordered a MomCozy pump which came today.

As of this evening i’m worried I may not be producing enough milk. When I tried to hand express nothing really came out and he is super sleepy. I have used the pump on both sides and only produced about 10ml max! That’s after 30 minutes of pumping.

Im not sure what to do in this case? Can it wait till morning if I feed him every 2 hrs through the night? Should I continue to pump and will this increase my supply?
My boobs are super soft and have never been hard at any point.

The amount you can express is not a sign of milk supply some women can't express at all but their body responds to baby. It's important to remind yourself of this. Also your body has to get used to giving up to the pump.
Kellymom website is a great source of info for bf, pumping etc.

7% weight loss on day 5 is good (I know that seems weird but he's gaining).

The only thing I would suggest is waking him at the 3 hour point to feed.
Milk supply is not constant it changes throughout the day, the "golden hours" for pumping is between midnight and 3am for stimulation (DS1 was in neonatal so I had to pump).
Main thing for supply is lots of water, eat lots of oats and skin to skin time. If you stress about how much your pumping it becomes a vicious loop.

Your doing brilliantly lots of chill out time together. If sleepy whilst feeding strip them down, tickle feet and blow in their face a bit too.

Congratulations on your new baby.
Pumping isn't an indication of supply.
Keep putting baby to the breast as often as you can, do lots and lots of skin to skin, offer breast again, make sure your drinking and eating plenty too (just in general as it's easy to forget with a newborn!)
Now the tie is cut you will probably start to see some improvement soon.
Well done on persevering through these early days!

Congrats on your baby! DD2 also had a 90% tongue tie only we didn't find out about until she was 8weeks old (long story). The healing process can go up and down so you might not see immediate improvement, but now it has been divided, things should start to get better. Really recommend working with an IBCLC lactation consultant if you can afford it because the one i saw was really good. As your baby is so little, I'd have thought there's lots of time for things to get improve. Lots of skin to skin, rest, water and i just tried to offer the breast every time DD2 opened her mouth basically 😅

If you’re pumping after nursing there’s probably not much left at that point!

as someone who when through hell trying to pump etc, 2 years BF, you’ll understand soon enough that baby is getting all that they need. The wet nappies are a massive indicator of that and that your body is doing a good job. So be proud of that. If you need to top up with formula for any reason don’t be ashamed to do so it’s ok is something I wish someone told me. But trying to nurse and feed a baby and pump isn’t great for anyone. He’s only 6 days old too, so your supply will be what he needs and will only increase in time. If you pump too much you may end up with an over supply! X

It’s very early days and your milk supply will not be properly established as yet.

FWIW, I couldn’t express at all, never leaked milk and my breasts never felt engorged. And I bfed 3 large babies.

CurlewKate · 03/05/2025 07:12

I really wouldn’t express at this age-particularly if it’s causing you stress. Just keep feeding. It’s the best way to stimulate your supply. And if he’s gaining weight you’re doing fine.

The pump doesn't show you what baby gets. As long as baby feeds regularly and has lots of wet and dirty nappies then yes they have enough.

It's statistically extremely rare to not make enough milk and the more you feed the more you will make.

I was advised to give a couple of bottles of formula after feeding when mine lost 11% (with epidural though) It gives them a bit of energy so they stay awake to feed. It gave mine horrible constipation though and I'm still not convinced it was necessary. He did put on 150g per day for 3 days though!

Which pump are you using? A hospital grade one will be much better and easier than a retail one
