Trying to give 2mo 1 bottle a day...

...but he only takes a very small amount. Since 3 weeks when I had a few probs bf'ing, we have been giving him a bottle of ebm (but sometimes formula if not had time to express). DH gives this at the 11ish feed so that I could go to bed early. He would usually take about 4oz. However, as the weeks have gone by (he's now 9 wks), he has been taking less and less - only 2 oz & that's a battle taking ages of stop/start.

We thought maybe because he is too tired at that feed as often had ti be woken to have it or was just not hungry. But if I bf at that feed he seems to take a full feed & then tends to go longer before waking for next feed! This week we have tried giving the bottle at an earlier feed when he's not so tired but it makes no difference to qty he takes.

We would like to persevere with him having a bottle so that on occasion he can be left with dh. Ds1 would never take a bottle as we introduced it too late & I found it hard always having to be available & found it difficult to go even pop out for an evening.

He is a big baby (10lb 7oz at birth) tracking on the 91st percentile, so would think that he should now be taking 6 or 7oz at a time - is this correct? I find it soul destroying to have to keep discarding my precious breastmilk after he's only had a little!

We are using Nuk bottles as that was the brand that DS1 eventually took to after mths of trying. Should we try a different brand - would that make a differnce? Starting to think it would be a whole lot easier to just not bother with bottle, but I know the flexibility would be so much easier with a nearly 3yr old to look after ad well. Any advice?

Just a quick note. I don't think you need to descard the EBM, just refridgerate it in a different serilised bottle or container. Might be worth an internet search on this though. I think there is mixed opinions on this. I have done it on occasion with my LO and she has been fine. I always smelt and tasted the milk first though.

6-7 oz sounds like quite a lot for a 9 week old. I started giving DS3 1 bottle at about 8 weeks, and he only took about 3oz to start off with.

Could it be that as your supply has adjusted to demand, he is getting more from the bf before this feed, and so just isn't as hungry at 11?

I seem to remember my DS wasn't taking 6-7oz until about 4 or 5 months, so perhaps in the meantime you could try storing you ebm in smaller portions so you can get out a second if he is hungry, but otherwise avoid waste.
