Thinking of giving one bottle to 8mo - which one?

8mo ds has been exclusively bf since birth but I'm thinking of introducing one bottle of formula on a infrequent basis so that DH can give a nighttime feed. He's taken bottles of expressed milk so no probs there and hope to give ebm wherever possible but I'm finding it difficult to find time to express atm. What formula should I give - follow on milk or standard formula? And what brand should I use? I imagine they're all pretty much the same but wondered if one was 'better' to transition to at this age. Finally, can anyone point me in the direction of any literature on how they make formula/what it contains?

Thanks.

my DS has had an occasional bottle of formula, and we went with cartons, as there was no doubt about sterility etc, no problems measuring water, and they are easy to transport. he has had them when with childminders, so it also made sure I knew they were making it correctly, as the sole problem was opening the carton! I read the ingredients on the sides of the cartons to decide, and chose SMA because it didn't mention fish or soy products (if I remember correctly) and I was a hormonal ball of fury at the time (I actually remember standing in the baby food aisle in Boots tutting and muttering to myself about it!). It may be worth getting one or two brands in cartons anyway to see if he will drink them? HIPP organic do cartons too, but they are mind bendingly pricey next to the SMA/Aptamil/Cow and Gate etc types. We have 1 HIPP carton in the changing bag for emergency feeds at the childminders so no idea if DS likes it. I'm expressing at the moment anyway, as I was worried about my supply dwindling at work!

follow on isn't necessary, but can occasionally be cheaper, so has that redeeming feature! hope you get a good break when your DH does the feed!

I used Aptimil on the basis that all of the doctors (mainly paediatricians) that I know used this for their children.

Ive just started giving my 10mth old 1 bottle a day of Cow&Gate #3 or Apimil #3. Maybe buy a couple of the pre-made up cartons to see which one baby prefers. Mine doesnt seem to notice the difference.
Im still Bfeeding 3x a day but am thinking might cut out one of those feeds purely for the reason that my baby fidgets and pinches and kicks while bfeeding and its getting v stressful! Shes fine with the bottle and doesnt nurse through the night since 9 mths and Im doing BLW.

Thanks for the input - seems like cartons are the way to go and frankly that suits me as I can't be bothered with all the faff of measuring etc! Interesting kveta that you avoided ones with fish oils - I thought that was good for babies development? Hmmm, obviously there is more to it than I thought and I'm already a bit up-in-the-air about giving him formula at all seeing as we've made it this far without... Difficult being a parent isn't it!
