My DS2 is 3 weeks old, and is bfing and gaining weight well, but when he bfs he seems to gulp own a lot of air, and make a sucking/clicking noise. I then struggle to get the wind up, and he is uncomfortable for ages, until it comes out when he poos.
He appears to be latching well, big mouth, and no pain for me. I think I have a very strong 'let down' he sometimes takes himself off at this point (cue frantic application of muslin.) but the 'gulping' continues afterwards.

I bf DS1 til 6 months -he also did this, but I can't remember what I did, or if he grew out of it.

Any advice gratfeully received.

Hi,
Is he pulled right in to you? I find that one of my DTs does this if she isn't pulled close in to me, my boob/nipple stretches a little and little gaps form through which she sucks air ifswim.
Other than this, perhaps he is still learning and his latch may get better.
Can you stop and wind him several times throughout the feed, rather than leave it until the end, you may find it comes up easier.

hth, otherwise bumping for you!

Clicking can be a sign of a problem with the latch, but can also be to do with a fast let-down, which sounds as if it could be the problem. See
Kellymom for more info. Also information on windy babies here.

It might be worth getting your latch checked out just to make sure.

Babies this age often do tend to be very windy, even if they're not doing the clicking. That gradually improves over time. For the first two or three months I had to spend ages winding DS after feeds, and even then he'd be uncomfortable, but gradually I stopped needing to wind him much at all.

DS started making the clicking gulping noise at some stage - possibly around 3 months? but he doesn't do it now at 6 months. I don't think I did anything different though.

HTH
