Hi, my dd is 9 days old. I have mastitus, on anti-bs and trying very hard to continue to BF. to help me I am hand expressing one feed a day so DH can give it to DD to give me a physical and psychological break.

But I am not sure how much we should be giving her. Is it the same as formelar at this age - so 100ml?

Thanks

If you can express easily, I'd offer as much as you can per feed, though 100ml is probably more than plenty. To avoid wasting it at this precious stage, you could store it in two lots of 50 so if she takes it all you can just start with the 2nd, and if she doesn't then you've got some stored up.

Poor you with mastitis - it's nasty. Well done for keeping on trying though - it can break many people.

Cheers bubbaandbump that is helpful to know, I am trying to express about 40mls at a time, so will attempt to up it to 50. I seem to spend all my time either b-feeding or expressing.

Hay ho!

Don't kill yourself doing it though, 40 in one go at this early stage is good going! It will get more and will also get easier as the days go by! It does seem relentless but it does get better!

Are you actually hand expressing or using a hand held expresser?
If you are hand expressing I would definately try to get hold of a hand or electric expresser, will surely make life much easier.
Hope things get easier soon.

best thing for mastitis is frequent feeding, so personally i wouldn't be taking any breaks

your baby will "milk" the breast more effectively than a pump, so frequent feeds for her are good in this instance!
