i have had thrush for what seems like ages, i have been to see my gp twice and he has given me 2 different creams-theyre not working, i now have pain deep in my breast-thought of asking for antibiotics but noticed an earlier thread where someone said they can make it worse-can anyone give me suggestions?

Aw jenk. Good luck. I feel for you.
Garlic and tea tree worked for me when all else failed. Peel clove of garlic, drop a little tea tree oil into it, thread cotton through it leaving long tail, pop it in overnight then pull out in the morning.
It's not sexy, but it worked for me.

If you're 'riddled with it' remember to cut out all sugar and yeast (thrush feeds on these) and take probiotics to restore healthy balance. You may even find your body craving sugar and yeast. Don't listen. It's the thrush talking.

All the best. x

Jenk, i totally feel for you! Had thrush problems for 9 weeks after DS was born as was given antibiotics in hospital for undiagnosed infection! Spidermama is spot on - breastfeeding network was brilliant for me when i rung up in a panic because i knew i had to feed lo again in an hour and just couldnt face the pain of it. My HV was excellent too - i was fortunate because she had suffered the same for 12 weeks and knew exactly what to do. You MUST get treatment for both you and baby - nystatin for him, daktarin and fluconazole for you. You can also take ibuprofen as a painkiller as well its now deemed okay (my gp said not but my HV said was okay and i was inclined to believe her because they are there to know whats best for babies and mums - most of the time, plus she took it herself). take half hour before a feed for best effect. The new chicco breastpads i found to be brilliant - very absorbant so breasts not kept in moist environment that thrush likes. if you have cracked nipples still then just use a little vaseline smeared on breastpad before putting on is good. Change breastpads very regularly - even if you dont think you need to. HV recommended taking yakult or similar daily to correct bio balance. Boil wash or boil on stove for 20 mins all bras and also add vinegar as per spidermama. The hygiene thing is the biggest thing here as it is so easy to reinfect. If you are expressing I would stop doing so until better or not use milk expressed to give to your lo - just throw it away until you are better. If you use a dummy then it must be washed and sterilised as soon as its spat out. Hope that helps and chin up - it does get better eventually.

Let us know how you get on with the homeopathy. It seemed almost too good to be true for me and I wondered if it was just a coincidence that it healed within a day of taking the remedy.
I'm interested to know how you get on.
Good luck. x

the pain has gone in my breasts, they are still a bit sore and i have surface thrush which i have a prescription cream for but i think the homoepathic thrush tablets are definately working

Jenk! Fluconazole is not an antibiotic - it's an antifungal and it really does work on thrush, wherever you have it! It will clear it from your breasts and down below! I think this sounds like a case where it will work well. As has been said earlier it is actually prescribed for babies so it doesn't harm them.
I think the complementary remedies are a really good idea but I think you need to get rid of this quickly and the oral dose is usually the most effective way.

aloha · 19/08/2005 11:17

you definitely don't want antibiotics! Thrush is a fungal infection, not a bacterial one.

hellsbells4 · 19/08/2005 13:29

wooops - showing my complete ignorance yet again!!! i assumed thrush was an infection - hence treatment with antibiotics. Actually I don't have a clue what the gp prescribed - it was 2 huge capsules i had to take in 2 doses in 12 hours. Whatever it was hasn't worked!! And canesten cream hasn't worked either - nor any of the other suggestions!!

jenk1 · 20/08/2005 11:59

got the fluconazole-had to argue for it, told gp that breastfeeding network recommended it and health visitor said i need it, took the higher dose yesterday afternoon and last night i was feeling even better, am still taking the homoepathic remedies as well....hope the other part of me is ok cos its saturday night and u know........!

Good for you Jenk! My GP - he doesnt like to be told much either - had a long discussion once regarding Becotide for DD and he was adament he knew better until he looked in her notes and saw that the paediatrician at the hospital had prescribed it originally! I always see a woman doc now when I have a problem - in my experience they seem to understand pregnancy/post natal things much more. Glad you are feeling better - thrush is totallly miserable. Use creams etc etc until they run out even if you feel like you're 100% just to be sure.
