tandem feeding, newborn first ?

I am currently feeding my one week old and 2yr old and a little confused about to work out this tandem feeding.

My mw said I needed to make sure I didn't give the baby's milk to the toddler and fed the baby first. My boobs are good ,but not that discriminatory. I had assumed that because my toddler is pretty much morning and night only it wouldn't really matter as he is only being offered the one side. Well apart from when my milk came in with a vengance and I had lumpy boobs.

So is my midwife right? ds2 had only lost 2oz by day 4 and seems settled between his frequent requests for feeds and generally appears to be thriving

apparently this is true for colostrum, but i'm assuming your milk's come in?
i didn't know this eithr, but same as you ds was only morning and night, and i'd imagione whenever i fed him dd would have had a feed an hour before anyway...

congratulations on new baby btw
I am still feeding a 3yo & 9mo - it gets easier!

I'm not sure there are any hard and fast rules. After the first few days I mixed it about a bit. I had oodles of milk and sometimes reckoned it was good for the toddler to drink some of the waterier stuff and the baby to get the fattier stuff. Other times baby went first. I've tandem fed twice and neither baby seems to have suffered.

well done to him and you

I enjoyed it, although when unsure about which entrance of church to head for I was approached by a lady with a sling, who quessed I was looking for the meeting as I also had a sling! Excellent literature avainable and cake and people who don't think your baby is being good if they happen to sleep all night

Congratulations on your new baby upsydaisy

I felt exactly like you described when I started feeding my two. In the end, I just mixed and matched and muddled through with no "rules".

ds2 regained birthweight on day6 and put on 17oz in the week after so I guess it was ok

Glad you found LLL. I have found it very helpful over the years, last time I went, there were three other tandem feeders past and present which was great.
