Moving on to Number 2 Avent Teat?

My daughter is two weeks old and pretty windy and a bit sicky.

We are bottle feeding and the HV suggested we try her on slow flow teats instead of the Newborn ones we are using.

Had a look today, and it seems like the Slow Flow teats are actually Number 2 size, for babies one month +.

I'm a bit confused and worried that we shouldn't move her on, although I wonder if the milk coming out faster may help with the wind?

Does anyone know of a reason we shouldn't give it a go? Don't want to make the situation worse in any way.

Thanks

the age on the packet is just a guide. I had ds on the 3 month+ teats at around 8 weeks old as he was falling asleep on the bottle and not taking his feed as he was tired from sucking too hard. I would try them, see if they help and if they dont you can always switch back. You will need the faster ones at some point anyway.

Hi

I found that it made wind worse to go up a size with my ds, and dd is less affected but gasps and gulps if I use a number 2 teat by mistake.

There's no reason why she can't keep on the slow flow teats for the whole time if needs be, but worth a try if you think it will help?

hi -congratulations!
it's interesting that the HV thinks a faster teat would aid the wind. doesn't make intuitive sense to me.

i'd be inclined to give infacol before the feed for a bit. I certainly did with all my dd's for a while (really not long at all).

saying that, just wondered - is she a big baby? if so she may well just be ready for a faster teat.

worth a try anyway, as pp said you will have to do it eventually, and it won't do any harm to try it out.

another thing i'm wondering is how often are you feeding?

I would say have a go, my dd always liked faster flow teats and moving up a size did help her wind once I remember. You'll realise if it's too soon the first time you try a new teat anyway as she'll gulp it down too fast and maybe posset. She could be fine on a fast teat, worth a try before you try infacol imo.

Hi all,
My first post on Mumsnet and what an excellent resource!
I'm mixed feeding LO who's 8weeks old. I'm thinking of changing her to number two Avent teats as she seems to never take enough from the bottle before stopping and is still waking up at 3am. However, I'm worried that this may put her off breastfeeding even more as she gets more from the bottle. I really want to breastfeed for as long as possible.
Any advice?

When you say 'she seems to never take enough' what volume of milk is she taking? Bf babies tend to have much smaller stomachs than fully ff babies and they only need a very small feed (1-3oz would be very very normal for a bf baby). A faster teat is just going to over fill her which isn't going to be good for her or for bfing as it may stretch her stomach so she wouldn't be satisfied with a regular volume of breastmilk.

Also at 8 weeks waking just at 3am is very 'good' sleeping, most babies wake much more than that (I know all of my 3 definitely did!). TBH waking in the night is just normal for babies with small stomachs and the need to be close to mum to keep safe - bfing at night keeps them warm, helps baby to regulate their breathing & heart rate by mimicking yours, feeds them and gives them a sleepy hormone hit (and it gives you a sleepy hormone hit to get you back to sleep quicker).
