EBF a big baby

DS was born 3 weeks ago and he was just over 9lbs. Have had a couple of comments recently about whether I'll continue to breastfeed him as I probably won't be able to satisfy his appetite!?! I haven't heard of this before and my midwife hadn't mentioned that this could be a problem. We don't appear to have any issues at the moment - he's feeding and gaining weight well. Anyone been told similar?

yep i got it with my boys, who were all over 9lbs and the last one was 10lb 13oz, they were fine on just breast milk tho, so ignore the comments and carry on, sounds like you are doing fine

CMOTdibbler · 24/06/2010 13:25

My DS was well over 10lb by his due date (he was born at 35 weeks) and I ebf him until he was 6 months with no problems.

Orangesarenottheonlyfruit · 24/06/2010 13:27

I had exactly this from my MIL. DD2 was born three weeks ago at nearly 10lbs. I was quite surprised at the comment and so far have found it easier than my 8lb DD1 as she feeds in big quantities but can also last longer so my boobs don't feel quite so abused. In fact, she is struggling to deal with my speedy letdown and sometimes ends up choking .

I guess it is one of those breastfeeding myths that never seem to quite go away.

Thanks ladies! That's what I thought but you know when someone plants a seed in your mind? Just nice to have some reassurance

Total myth. It's a supply and demand thing- he demands and you supply, exactly what he needs. Magic!

Morloth · 24/06/2010 15:02

I just weighed DS2 today for the first time in 6 weeks, he is almost 6.5kgs [14lbs] (at 13 weeks), fully breastfed, he does like to feed a lot through the day but sleeps all night!

He was 9lbs flat at birth.

Personally I find having a whopper is very reassuring with BFing, you can see that it is working just fine.

You grew him from nothing, Fit2burst

Why would you body stop growing him now?

Mother bf twins and triplets - a single nine pounder is a lot less

tiktok · 24/06/2010 15:05

I meant 'mothers' not 'mother' - 'mother' sounds like my own mother!!

Who did not have twins and triplets

stinkypinky · 24/06/2010 17:18

My grandmother BF triplets 79 years ago. My DD was 10lb 3 at birth and is now 9 weeks old (EBF) On the odd occasion I have wondered about my supply being sufficient, I just think of her

mousymouse · 24/06/2010 17:24

don*t worry. dd was over 9lbs and thrived on bm.

tiktok · 24/06/2010 17:48

Aw, stinky - have you got/did you have triplet aunts/uncles? Fab!

stinkypinky · 24/06/2010 18:30

Tiktok no other surviving triplets yet, but my cousin conceived triplets (naturally)lost one at about 14 weeks, but the other two babies survived thankfully.

The money was on me to have triplets as I am so like my gran, both physically and temperament. I have two girls, and am a bit fearful of trying again, esp as over 40 which increases likelihood!

(runs off in excitement as the tiktok spoke to me!!!)

SoupDragon · 24/06/2010 18:34

DS1 was a 10lber and, once we'd got breast-feeding sorted, he piled on weight. DS2 also a porker and he did just fine too.

GroovyGretel · 24/06/2010 18:39

Mine were both 11pound 4 (ouch) and fully bf. You'll be fine and dandy.

stinkypinky · 24/06/2010 18:41

So in awe, I didn't even read the comment properly!

My Dad is a triplet with two sisters, non identical so 3 eggs. All surviving. Gran had 2, then triplets, then another one! In awe!

MoonFaceMama · 24/06/2010 19:36

You will be fine! Just remember that am empty feeling boob is still making milk! Lots of people have given up bfing due to probably unfounded worries about supply.

KnitterNotTwitter · 24/06/2010 21:52

Pah - load of rubbish. You'll be fine. My DS was 10lb 6 when born and ebf until weaning at 6 months - by that point he was well over 25lb and I still had plenty of milk for him.

You'll be fine as long as you demand feed and stick to your intuition - and definitely don't listen to those loons!!

tiktok · 24/06/2010 23:56

Aw, go on with ya, stinky

Fit2burst · 25/06/2010 13:49

Thanks again ladies for the reassuring comments. As mentioned, DS is gaining weight nicely so it's 'so far so good' and I have no intentions of giving up bfing just yet
