Formula advice for 7mth

DD is 7.5 mths old and have been BFing and doing BLW. But am starting to wean her with formula as am going back to work in a couple of months.

So just wondering how you formula feed when you're out and about? Do you really have to use a made up bottle within two hours? We are often out for lunch, leaving around 12 and back after the afternoon feed, which we have around 2.30. So I tend to make up a bottle before i leave which she has when we're out but it can be over 3 hours later. Also she often will just have about half of this, and then want some more a bit later, which i just give her from the same bottle. Am i going to give her food poisioning? She seems fine so far. I've been using powdered formula as i had a tub i bought before she was born that i never used as just breastfed.

I'm not sterilising bottles either, as figure she's over 6 months and BLW so pretty much eating anything. And i know opinion is divided about whether sterilisation is necessary anyway (although i was before she was 6 mths when she would have the odd bottle of EBM).

Woudl like to know opinions please, thanks

no need to sterilise, bt you do need to make bottles up with freshly boiled water, and use within a certain time limit yes

why don't you just get some cartons to use if yo're out and about>

or just stick with breastfeeding! many mums breastfeed around work. feed morning and evening and just offer water or alternative milk during the day.

I will usually take a bottle with cooled boiled water and a pot of measured powder and mix when it's needed.
Occasionally, if I have to go out when I thought I'd be in I will take a made up bottle from the fridge and keep it in a cool bag.
But as neither of these options is what you are supposed to do, the correct thing is to take a sterilised bottle and a ready made carton which is sterile til it's opened.

I still sterilise bottles and teats. I might not if I had a husband with money and a dishwasher

What doughnutty said.

A friend of mine who is formula feeding takes a small tupperware container with her in her bag with the amount of formula she'll need already measured out.

For example, if she's going out for a day and knows her DS will need 2 feeds she'll take 2 containers each with 7 oz in them, which she just tips into the bottle of water when he needs them.

According to her, she does this because her son isn't keen on the ready made containers, but I'm not so sure about that.

I do the same as doughnutty, take out sterilised bottle of cooled boiled water then separate containers with the right amount of baby powder in.
Or sometimes I will take the cartons and a sterilised bottle.

this explains very clearly why formula should NOT be made up with cooled boiled water

babies died in Belgium not that long ago from necrotizing enterocolitis after being given formula that was contaminated with e.sakazakii

ok, the risks are small I would imagine. but it's one that's very easily avoided

They sell (I think its Avent) a little plastic tub with 3 sepparate compartiments so you can carry there up to 3 doses of formula. I have this and its wonderful. You can feet up to 8 scoops of formula in each. The "inside bit" can be removen and then you got a very handy tupperware for solids too.

I used to take just water on the bottle, freshly boiled and put it in a thermal bag do it kept warm no problem.

You can also use the tetrapack milks, but my problem with these is that they are only 200ml, and DD takes 240ml (8 ounces)

Meant "fit", not "feet"
