What can you do whilst breastfeeding?

It's early days for me atm, but so far I can:

Walk down the stairs
Post on mumsnet
Make a cup of tea

but I'm sure those of you with toddlers have reached the dizzy heights of multi-tasking!

Actually the worst thing I did while breastfeeding was allow my family to video me at a family get together. I have it on tape now to haunt me for the rest of my life (I wore a button down the front dress which did reveal rather too much skin - basically all the breast apart from the areola which was covered by ds1's head!)

Answered the door to the postman, paid the window cleaner....

Arrgh I'm jealous, all I manage is reading stories to ds1 or reading to myself, watching tv, phoning people and my specialty - sleeping! Cant do anything involving standing up/walking, thats 40K's for you though! Cant feed in cradle position either still to have to rugby ball (getting awkward now he is seven months) or cross cadle with a pillow or lie down.

Have had whole conversations with people who apparently didnt even notice I was bfing, a not very observant plumber etc.

Only thing I couldn't do whilst bf was the ironing, cooking hot things or chopping/slicing bread.

"oooh I can add another one now....

Sing hymns in church!!!!"

I can go one up on that - I used to play the piano (and sometimes the organ too) in church (for a service) while BF

NotQuiteCockney · 15/08/2005 02:31

I can:

  • go from feeding lying down on the floor to standing up without losing latch.

  • knit.

  • and most of what everyone else has said ... except no cooking. I'm too nervous. Oh, I think I've cooked with a sling, but not without.

Go to the toilet! had to do this lots in the early days!

Answer the door, get myself a drink..

I once got up off the couch, went upstairs, got undressed and got into bed all without unlatching because madam was so grumpy.

Now I can do pretty much anything because whatever position I happen to be in, she can climb over me, and find my nipple! Its excellent fun feeding toddlers, bending down to get them dressed then looking down to see they've got their mouth clamped round your nipple and they're grinning up at you! Going to help them latch on in bed only to find they've already done it and I hadn't noticed..

You're all so clever!

Afte 6 months I still have to use two hands. In fact I enjoy stopping and putting my feet up for five.
Oh I can sleep as well - at night DS uses the self serve restaurant.

moondog · 15/08/2005 14:33

Do a hands free pirouette.
Ds hangs on with his amazing suction...

hercules · 15/08/2005 14:34

climb walls

You ladies are Wonder Mums!!! I have to sit on the bed with a pillow next to me and feed DD in the rugby hold. Therefore i am limited in movement. I can do all the baby maintenance , read and watch telly. I can just about manage pouring myself a glass of water!

I take my hat off to all of you. You are stars and very lucky. Because of this silly position i have started with, i therefore am limited on where i can feed and i also have to take a 'v' cushion with me if i'm going to peeps houses. I had to feed in the back of our car once with the cushion at a wedding!

hunkermunker · 16/08/2005 20:34

Mads1, how old is your DD? I used to feed DS in the cross cradle hold (where you hold the boob you're feeding from with the same side hand (eg left boob in left hand) - couldn't manage the traditional cradle hold until he was bigger and steadier (milk just poured out of his mouth and made my lap wet!).

Occasionally try different positions - you'll crack it in the end and soon be shinning up mountains while breastfeeding

Mads1 · 16/08/2005 21:22

Hunkermunker - Do you mean hold baby in a 'normal' position but change the hands around? I shall try this tomorrow! Thank you!

hunkermunker · 16/08/2005 21:27

Yes, that's it! Hurts your back a bit, but makes public feeding easier than the rugby ball position! And soon she will graduate to the traditional cradle hold, I'm sure.
