Is my ebf DD pooing too much?

Seems I have the opposite concern of several bf mums... every nappy of my 5 week old DD has poo in it - 8-10 a day. During the night she did a particularly huge and explosive one - and had 3 tiny blisters when i changed her. I sort of wish she could give the skin round her bottom a rest. The poo is quite sticky and less mustard seedy and more watery than I remember my DS' being. I did show a nappy's contents to HV and bf MW as I had their undivided attention at a bf session the other day... they thought ok, but I am beginning to wonder if she has a tummy problem. At least 2 books I've looked at say bf babies very efficient at using milk and hence less poo and less chance of nappy rash than bottle fed.

I do like drinking grapefruit juice and it did occur to me that its acidity might be contributing. Will cut out at once.

Any advice would be really welcome.

This sounds normal....there are plenty of bf babies who poo like this. She may not be one of the ones who start to poo less often after the first weeks. Sounds like she prob needs some protective cream on her little bum, though.

I can't thing how the acidity of grapefruit juice would get into your breastmilk, so I doubt that's a reason for this (perfectly normal) elimination behaviour.

My dd does this and she's 4 weeks today, thought it was normal . Will watch with interest.

She can only poo out what you're putting in Sounds like she's just getting plenty of milk.

Try smearing her in vaseline after every change. We used Sudocrem for ages with varying results until MIL changed DS and used Vaseline - it cleared up his nappy rash in no time! Seems to be a much better barrier to the poo/wee. Sudocrem is good if they're very sore and need the antibacterial bit but otherwise we use Vaseline very time.

DS was like this - we do have fewer poos now he is older.

I found Kamillosan cream cleared up the beginnings of a rash.

My DD was exactly the same as this, every time that she latched on to feed she would poo without fail She to was getting a sore bot so used sudocrem until it cleared up. She's now 13 weeks and things have settled down which means I buy less nappies i'm sure that your DD will be the same.

thank you so much - all very reassuring! I've been using sudocrem but think will try some of the alternatives you've suggested. Had also forgotten about the concept of 'no nappy' time - should reintroduce that too.

The weleda calendula one is nice as well, costs a bomb though.

All my 3 DC have been like this and had bad nappy rash due to the pooing. I was changing 15+ nappies a day at one point. It seemed to get better at around 8-10 weeks. I recommend covering bottom with very very thick layer of metanium, found that none of the other nappy creams worked as well.

Agree re: as much no nappy time as possible (use old towels) also if the nappu rash gets too bad the GP will give you timodene which helps.

harverina · 22/06/2010 22:22

My DD is now 11 weeks and up until about 2 weeks ago there was poo in every nappy. My MW said it was normal for some BF babies to have poo in every nappy so I assumed it was ok. I use barrier cream every time I change and put loads on before bedtime. You should be able to get cream from the pharmacy through minor ailments.

To echo what a few others have said, my DD who is 8 weeks old has some poo in every nappy and often (couple of times a day) has 2 or 3 dirty nappies during a feed.
My HV seems to think this is totally fine.
