Breast pads - a few questions.

I'm new to bf so learning as I go along, couldn't manage with dd1 but it seems to be going really well with dd2 who is 3 weeks old. However, I was wondering which breast pads other people have got on with best. I have so far tried Mothercare, Asda and Boot's own brand and all of them move around a lot (despite sticky strips) and if I don't check that there in the right position will mean I leak onto my clothes.

The other question was will I need to wear breast pads for as long as I bf? Probably a stupid question but really not sure.

I much preferred the washable ones, any disposables I tried really made my nipples sore, (have very sensitive skin). Found the lace kept them in place really well, and much cheaper too.

lansioh or tommy tippee for me but the lansinoh ones are bigger and slimmer and stay in place better

Been a while since I bfed, and it was in the US too -- don't know if you can lay your hands on Curity pads but I found them great. I tried washable ones too, but found that unless I wore several at once they soaked through in seconds. And they came out like little coasters from the wash.

After a good few weeks not right now you can press one breast to stop leaking while feeding on the other side. You can sort of train yourself not to leak. It will clear up after a few months at most.

i like the boots 'ultraslim' pads - they are bigger so they move much less.

the washable ones were rubbish for me though

Johnsons were the best for me. Avent washables leaked a big circle around the edge of the pad. Morrisons own brand were awful, stuck to me and hurt

Thanks again for all the help and advice. Will try some of the brands mentioned and hope for more luck. I guess it's still early days too in terms of leaking, but good to know it may stop eventually.

DD2 slept through last night apart from one ten minute feed so woke at 6:30 with really swollen boobs, put her on and got the let down sensation and then she came off and milk sprayed across the bedroom . Didn't know that could happen!

I got all mine in the eye at full force at one time or another

Bought some Tommee Tippee ones today as there were no Johnsons in Mothercare, but there all individually wrapped!!! What's that all about, seems like a bit of a waste of packaging. Will give them a go and see how it goes.

On another bf plus, I bf in public for the first time yesterday and again today. Yay for me, I was very proud of myself.

Little Lamb bamboo washables are just lovely, really soft, quite thin (thinner than avent ones), and wash really well. I wouldn't have used them in first month but for just little leakages they are great.

princessProudmel · 20/06/2010 20:04

Johnsons have been the best for me by a long way. They are thicker though.
The sainsburys/tesco own owns were scratchy, thin and papery. Leaked and all the stuffing crumpled up.

SirBoobAlot · 20/06/2010 22:55

Johnsons are by far the nicest ones I've used, and probably work out cheaper as they leak less. Now DS is 7.5 months I don't leak as much, so am now using washable ones, which are actually a lot more comfortable (and have really funky designs ) but I don't think they would have been absorbent enough to begin with.
