Green, frothy, watery, mucousy poos

Have read this could be caused by too much hindmilk and that 'block feeding' might be worth trying.

I just wondered how do we do this without it affecting my supply? DS is nearly 15 weeks old, gaining weight well. He is and always has been quite windy (this seems to be improving over last couple of weeks). I'm concerned that each side will have big 'gaps' and so my supply might be affected?

Any suggestions or thoughts appreciated. Thanks for reading.

Hi Sheep, my DD (nearly 11 weeks) sometimes does green poos too so I was curious to read this thread... but what does "Block feeding" mean?

I've read that if baby has too much foremilk (i.e. the thinner, watery stuff at beginning of feed) (got it wrong in last post!) and not enough hindmilk, then it can result in green watery and mucousy poos.

Block feeding is basically only feeding from one side for 3-4 hours, then only feeding from the other side for 3-4 hours etc. The aim is to only give one side, so they should take more hindmilk.

I wouldn't worry if it is only the odd green poo. I'm a bit concerned, as DS2s poos have been consistently green for quite a few weeks, as well as being very watery (like wee coming out of his bum!), explosive, stringy / mucousy (like snot) in places and even frothy (bubbles).

I've read that main two reasons can be too much foremilk OR a milk intolerance (I cut out milk for about 6 weeks, which helped a bit, but poos still not right).

Hope this helps.

we had the same. i cut out dairy ten days ago and poos still green but more normal consistency, less explosive and he seems happier (4mths)

I had this problem. The green poos could be a virus/too much foremilk/dairy intolerance.

If you've got an overabundant supply then block feeding will help balance things better for your DS. Your boobs will adjust to the new timings so you will have enough milk.

With the dairy intolerance, you need to cut out milk, cheese, yoghurt and hidden dairy (e.g. in ready meals etc). It takes a few weeks for it to fully clear out.

I have a ridiculous oversupply - DS used to choke. I tried block feeding (first one boob every 4 hours, then stretched to every 12 hours!!!) and it worked as made the flow of milk less vicous. I also cut out all dairy as DS is intolerant.

How do you feed at the moment? Do you offer both breasts in a feed? Try offering just the one. If you only use one and switch at the next feed, don't switch. Start with small blocks and gradually increase them until the poos improve.

thanks for posting.
i was offering both sides, but i'm now offering just one and we had our first yellow, mustardy poo this morning - yay!!

Thanks for explaining about block feeding. Hope those poos are staying yellow for you!

Can these type of nappies also be a sign of teething due to the extra saliva they produce?
