Engorgement - Going from Breast to Bottle

AdiVic · 15/06/2010 21:37

Hello

For the past 10 days I have been trying to get my 5 month old from breast to bottle. All is going well and she takes the bottle quite happily, but towards the end of the evening, my right boob, which as always been the slight favorite is full and huge, and slightly painful. At this stage, how many feeds should I be replacing with the bottle? How long does the huge swollen boob stage last, and when will they start drying up? I've always had quite a good supply. Any ideas greatly appreciated x

Hi,
I don't think you can really say how many feeds to replace, just do it in your own time & very slowly if you feel full or you could end up in alot of pain if you become too engorged. I was always like that & just dropped 1 feed a week to start of with. Could you express? Just a little bit to relieve the pain.Reduce the amount you express each day so you dont produce more milk. It takes months to compleatly dry up but you wont feel full, just notice the odd drop when you have warm shower etc.
Hope this helps.

To relieve engorgement (but not your embarrassment if your OH finds out...) put a couple of cold Savoy Cabbage leaves down your bra - crush/crumple them a bit first. It's not the most romantic image your other half will ever have of you though... and there is a slight smell
